Joining a gym is a big commitment. It will cost you a bunch, plus you have to "make time" to go there. We have some great ideas for an at home workout that is just as good as any gym.

I don't have a membership to a gym, nor I have I really been in alot of them, but I hope I can help you out here.

1) A gym has differnet things, possibly including:

weight lifting equipment
possibly some type of personal trainer
treadmills and such
possibly other things, but they might depend on where you go as well.

2) I'd say that, yes, the gym is worth the money. The gym can help you stay in shape and help keep you fit.

3) Yes, the gym can help you with fitness.

I hope I helped and good luck!

Gyms typically have one large room with a section devoted to machines and a section of free weights. They will also have areas with exercise bikes and treadmills. Obviously this is generalizing but most gyms will at least have this.

Whether or not the gym is worth what you pay is really up to you to decide. It will depend on how much you go and what they offer to you while you are there. If you go alot it will probably seem like it's worth more than it would if you only went once a month or something like that.

As long as you go to the gym it should be very helpful for your fitness. Usually when you join a gym you will get at least one appointment with a personal trainer to discuss your goals and formulate a plan to accomplish them.

Another option that you have is to buy some weights and exercise on your own. I imagine that the cost of a basic set of weights and the equipment to use them might be comparable to a years membership a a gym, but if you were to choose that route you wouldn't have as large of a variety of exercises to choose from.

I would advise you to shop around before you commit to a membership if that's what you decide to do. Gyms will commonly have sales where you can save quite a bit of money by joining at the right time. If you a student you probably can get a discount for that as well.
Alot of gyms will require you to sign up for at least 6 months at a time once you do sign up, make sure you know what you are getting into before you do it.

Best of luck
