My dogs are trained as fence dogs (they make a lot of noise when someone is on the street or pulls up into the driveway). They would not be good watch dogs if they were in the house.
Excessive barking? No, they only bark when there is something to bark about. No barking at the moon or just to bark. They sound off when sirens are heard too (sounds like a wolf pack when they do). Sounds so cool ! ! ! Howling.
They are not socialized because they are guard dogs. Permited by Animal Control. They have a half acre to watch.
Like most dogs, they crave affection & they get it at least 2 to 3 times a day.
Edit: My street is a dead end street but we get a lot of foot traffic, there is over 30 dogs on my street & the barking starts at one end of the street & doesn't stop until the walkers are out of sight. So with all these dogs no body complains expcept those that don't have dogs. 2 houses out of 22.

What's funny, I think dogs that actually live in apartments go out more and are more socialized than those with a backyard. I think this is the case because these people are under the misconception that they get adequate exercise in the backyard when it's like hello they just go pee and poop out there now. Every dog needs to go out and see the world no matter how big their backyard is unless you have a few acres the pup can roam arond in. I know my parents did this to our two dogs for quite sometime but now they're both 13-14 and get really tired on walks.

Providing the yard is safe and secure, and the dog feels content out there, then I say that`s the best place for him. I have two dogs > a Shepherd and a Doberman. The Shepherd would much rather be outside, regardless of weather conditions, so that`s where he spends most of his time. The Dobe, on the other hand, thinks that any place that dosen`t have a sofa, is no place for a dog, so he stays curled up inside. If you`re in doubt about your own dog, you can do as I did >>>> install a "doggie door".

People think a dog is happier when they are able to not be tied or kenneled, little do they know that a dog loves to go for walks and see a different site once in a while.
I live on some acreage and my dogs are of course able to run, we do have about 10 acres fenced off, but I still take my dogs to the local dog park or a walk they get to go somewhere.
Great question

I haven't been real high on leaving my dogs out in our fenced yard all day. I suppose if the dog is safe behind a fence, not barking or digging out, you aren't worried about predators, there's shelter from the elements, then okay. We have coyotes in the neighborhood, my dogs are small and would be a nice lunch snack, so they're never outside alone and outside all day isn't an option for me. My neighbor's senior Westie was pulled out of the jaws of a large, male coyote and needed 15 stitches - chilling thought.

Leave their dog in the backyard for how long? and do they neglect the dog of food and water? I used to leave my dog in the backyard... but we gave him food and water... he was happy because he had all that running and digging space... we also didn't just leave him there without a friend in the world... we always played with him and took him inside and took him for walks...

I think it's cruel. Dogs are social animals and need the interaction. I don't understand why people get a pet and then basically ignore it. I feel sorry for the dogs. These are the dogs that bark at everything because they haven't been taught any social skills and haven't had any real interaction or probably get walked. :(
While we're at it, could everyone stop leaving their pets in the car, too. It doesn't take long for it to get dangerously hot in there even on days when it's not in the 90s. Okay, I'm done now. Thanks.

Even worse. Leaving a dog alone in an apartment and then getting mad at the dog because he has an accident. It's not fair to a dog to leave a dog alone in either place. If you cant spend time with the dog, give them to someone who can.

Dogs were meant to be members of your family and not "yard ornaments". People that do that are being cruel to the dog. They think " it has a yard, a dog house, food and water what else could it want" The answer to that is "THEM to be included in the family to be able to lay a their master's feet and be happy." Anything else is unacceptable.

It doesn't make much sense to me either. What's the point of having a dog if it doesn't spend time with you. My boys are part of the family....they hang out with us all the time.
