"when you say the Qur'an says kill infidels I think you are retarded."

He then said that the Quran does say that but it was 'revealed' in a time when polytheists were the infidels. Two questions:

1. Does this mean that the Quran verses are time specific and can be discarded?

2. Does this mean kill polytheists or just kill polytheists way back when the verse was revealed??

Actually there is an entire method to interpret the Quran.

One verse explains another. The Hadith explains other verses. Others are authentic Arabic that many Arabs today do not understand. And they are Verses that are situation specific, where others are open.

Indeed Muslims today have hard time understanding their religion, including their Imams & scholars. They live their dark age. Just like Christians during the Dark Age!

Infidel is an incorrect word to use.

Be more specific --

1) the Christians and Jews are called "people of the book"

2) the Idolators are called - Mushrikeen

Muslims had to go through 14 years of nonviolence until they were given permission to fight back in self defense and then go on the offensive until the attackers were crushed.

The Quran has some very belligerent passages:

"Strike off their [infidel's] heads. Strike off their finger-tips! … because they defied God and his Apostle [Muhammad]." (Sura 8:12-13)
"Make war on them [infidels] until idolatry shall cease and God's religion shall reign supreme." (Sura 2:193)
"Seize them and put them to death wherever you find them." (Sura 4:89)
"Believers, make war on the infidels who dwell around you." (Sura 9:123)
"When the sacred months [Ramadan] are over, slay the idolaters wherever you find them. Arrest them; besiege them; and lie in ambush everywhere for them. If they repent [convert to Islam] and take to prayer and render the alms levy, allow them to go their way." (Sura 9:5)

The standard interpretation, in practice through history, is to emphasize making war against us infidels to force us to submit to the theocracy of Islam. The usual practice is not to kill the infidel who has stopped fighting back, but to make the converting yet unresisting infidel a dhimmi, i.e., a second-class citizen who pays extra "jizyah" taxes and has limited rights.

Of course, the variety of ambiguous commands in the Quran allows for the emergence of murderous death cults, such as al Qaida. Unfortunately, a religion based on a book rather than on the living Word, Jesus Christ, the Son of God who showed us the perfect way, is helpless to moderate the most violent interpretations.

Too, they have a special problem in that the Islam prescribes the death penalty for apostasy:

This means that critical thinking about Islam is always tempered by the knowledge that someone may declare a fatwa--religious edict calling for the death sentence--upon you for giving a wrong answer.

Even the verses you refer to only say to kill unbelievers who are trying to wipe out your faith, as a defensive measure.
