It is my grandma's maiden name and no one in my family knows how to pronounce it.

In Dutch it would be pronounced Tidy. The -je is the equiv of the English -ie. The second t is a blunted sound like a d.

The article is written in Low Saxon, because "Tietje" is deriving from that language. And indeed, this language is not only spoken in my homeland Lower Saxony, but in vast parts of the Netherlands, too. Tietje can be a male first name as well as a family name. We pronounce it "Teet-geah" (with the "g" spoken as in "gender" or "gin"), the stress is on the first syllable. Very often this surname is also appearing as Tiedje, Tietjen or Detjen.
