Yes, I do think it is possible to love too much. I'm speaking of self destructive love, where one loses their own sense of self, of who they are. Imagine a young man who falls very hard for a woman who is indifferent to him. The poor guy's so in love with her -- or possibly in love with the idea of being in love -- that he can't even see that the love of his life couldn't care less about him. By any definition, that's loving TOO much. The main repercussion, in this case, would be a seriously broken heart. If it happened too many times -- say the young man chronically fell for women who were far out of his league -- he could become quite bitter and eventually reject women altogether. Just what the world needs: another misogynist is created.
Is that what you were looking for? ...a man-woman thing?

I agree with some of the other comments. It's all in how you love.
If you idolize or are giving a "controlling love" then it's the wrong kind of love and may be too much. As the chiche goes, if you love someone, set them free.
On the other hand, I think people grow together in love when they're together over long periods of time. In a marriage, two people learn to love each other more and more every day (even though there are some days where the two can't stand each other!) And friends grow in deeper non-sexual, non-romantic love when they come to know each other over years. (Kind of like the proverbial "we fought in the trenches together and were there for the good times and bad" thinking.) Those types of love are healthy.
So I guess it depends on the situation. But I think the ideal is like the tagline of most happy-go-lucky emails: Love like you've never been hurt!

Not only possible, but entirely probable. Othello complains that he loved "not wisely, but too well" -- then he doesn't specify exactly how one might pull that off. Every lover has it in him/her to go just over the line between love and insanity.
As for the repercussions: I've read all of Agatha Christie's mysteries at least once; many of them are not about murders caused by hate, but rather about crimes driven by love -- "the most dangerous thing in the world," one of her characters observes.

no shocker Im coming from the Christian perspective.
The sincerest love there is..is probably that between a mother and a child, yes? Well, the bible teaches us, that as much as you love that child, you do not put that child above God. Nothing is supposed to come before Him. For me, I love my kids but I dont want God to ever have to 'test' my love for Him because I've begun to worship my children (the gifts) more than I worship the Giver.
Pain is sometimes defined as God's megaphone to get our attention. I dont want God to ever have to 'get my attention' through a test that either forces me to choose between He and them...or they have to be 'moved' to enable me to focus on Him. So the repercussions are...God having to remind you who comes First.

I dont think you can love too much ...
because the dangerous relationships are built on obsession , lust , possession .... and not truly love
this isn't to say that when you love , you dont hurt ... but that is part of love
it is compassion and empathy and understanding ... and that brings its own pain
I cry every day to be honest ... for different reason , for different types of love
I wouldn't give it up for anything

Sure, if one acts unwisely and obsessively.
Look at the movie "Fatal Attraction."
Look at how some parents are so overprotective that they almost smother their children.
Look at how some teens commit suicide over someone they love who does not return their feelings.

No, you can never love too much. Just don't get that confused with: letting people walk all over you, use you or control you!
