many dogs are. there's not much you can do. make him feel protecting. try getting him used to loud noises, by making them. Take him to a room where it's not as loud, feed him treats.

I know how you feel. I have 2 dogs, ones afraid of fireworks and the other is afraid of thunder. With the older dog I take her in my computer room and I put a nature sounds cd in and turn up the volume. I not sure about the other dog because we have only had her for 2 weeks, so I hope this works fro her also. Anyway Good Luck.

My cat is the same way..and we live in florida also. Since we had him 3 years ago, we got him before a hurricane and since then he has been so afraid of the rain/storms. So i made him a safe place in the bathroom where he can curl up and feel safe. It works. And you always know where to find him when it is raining..Try a comforting and safe place for your dog, sit there with them pet them, give a treat or a bone while its thundering so he knows its safe. Good luck!

I have 3 dogs that are all scared of the thunder. All 3 will get on the couch together and cuddle. Sometimes one of the pits will bark at the thunder too.

I have a Chihuahua that will literaly hyperventilate during a storm. I found a product made for people but is safe for animals that helps him so much. It's called RESCUE REMEDY (a Bach Flowers product) and you can get it at any health food store. I worked at a horse breeding facility that put it in the stallions' water to keep them calm and it worked so well. They were all so calm and sweet! I just put it in my dog's water bowl (a couple of drops) when it's about to storm. And you can use it too when you're stressed :)

Well catch him put him in your bed and cover him with a blanket and leave his head out and make him lay down and stroke him.... most dogs are terrified of the thunder... but dont get so hung up about it.... and keep the lights on and blind and curtains closed..

My dog is afraid of thunder too. Don't be worried. Try to keep him with you whenever it thunders and praise him. Try to even take his mind off of it by playing with him or giving him a toy or bone to chew on.

Just let him be. He will find a "safe" place to go to and ride out the storm. Whatever you do don't hold/pet him and console him because then he will think that there is something really wrong and be even more scared. Just go about your business as usual.

Try to ignore his fear reaction. Do not "love" on him when he is in that state of mind. This will only reinforce the behavior. You need to act normal, go around the house doing normal things. You can even try getting one of his favorite toys to play with him and just try to get his attention elsewhere. Good luck.
