Which of the two?

Simbha, how is technology used to 'justify war', I'm interested?

qxzqxzqxz =- religion isn't just a 'tool', is it? It is a proscribed way of life. If a religious book says to kill unbelievers etc, how is that just a 'tool'? It is an instruction.

Don't you agree?

well the causes of war are complex. science and religion certainly don't affect war in the same way. no one has ever fought a war over, say, whether it was newton or leibniz who invented the calculus. religion, i think, tends to make war more likely by narrowing mental territory (think of the crusades... "it is intolerable that the muslim heretics / christian infidels control the holy land") but cannot always be identified as the primary cause of war. for instance when william the conqueror invaded england, he sought the approval of the pope. if the pope hadn't given it to him, i don't think william would've changed his mind about invading, he'd just try to find some other way to legitimate his cause.

Neither. Selfishness causes war. There isn't a war that was not started because of someone's selfishness. Most wars are all about someone wanting to take control or retain control over other people. The revolutionary war was due to England wanting to have complete control of the Colonies, The Civil War was about a group of states wanting control of their states and the Union not wanting to give up their control, WW2 was about Hitler wanting to control the world, The war in Iraq is all about a group of Militant Muslims wanting to control the world and force everyone to be muslim.

Control over others is selfish. Allowing people the right to freedom is selfless.

Religion and Science have nothing to do with it. When they are a factor, it is just because someone is hiding behind religion. If there had not been Jews in WW2, Hitler would have found another group to wipe out.

Religion was and is often used as an excuse. Science makes it easier to kill lots of people. Neither actually causes war. Ignorance has done worse than both of them.

Neither Man causes war and then hopes that religion will end it by using science to get rid of his/her enemies. Then spend the next 50 plus years saying how terrible it was to have to fight.

I know this sounds cynical but if you look at history all wars have been started by man. Check it out.

Pseudo science causes war.

When evolution was morphed from a bad theory into science, Hitler grabbed the mantle and set out to murder all the inferior races (untermenschen) so the superior Aryan people (ubermenschen) could inhabit the entire world.

They are both tools. Neither of them are intrinsically good or evil. However, either of them can be used for good or evil (however you want to define good/evil).

Science allows you to communicate with friends/relatives around the world. Science also provides people with the capability to produce weapons.

Religion allows people to have hope for the future and overlook difficulties in life. Religion can also be used for murder (witch trials, suicide bombings, crusades etc.).

Religion can be used to start a war. Science can allow a war to be waged.

Neither. People cause wars. They will use ideologies and technology to justify war and further destruction but it is the mind of man that wages war itself.

And to Lucas above: Hmm... maybe not but Leibniz-Newton? How about Bohr-Einstein? :P

What the heck... I've never heard such a silly comment.
Religion is the cause of most wars.. or the catalyst! However, science does provide religion with the weapons to fight its wars with!
