I am having a destination wedding in Hawaii and was thinking instead of the traditional reception, we could all go to a Luau. Would you as guest think this is cheap way to go or would you feel cheated in any way knowing that you traveled all that way for a luau? My fiance and i just arent into the whole dancing and cake cutting stuff, this is more our style.

A bit overdone. The luaus on the island aren't really private (if you go with a hotel). If you have a reception and go with a more Hawaiian inspired buffet that might be better. The great thing about Hawaii is the mix of cultures and food. Rather than the traditional luau, why not give your guests food that truly represents the cultural diversity of Hawaii? If you're interested in knowing more, message me and I'll do my best to answer any questions. (Originally from Hawaii and just got married there this past June!)

Hi and congratulations!

I LOVE Hawaii !! :)

Your idea does sound nice, and, as a guest, I would not feel "cheated" as you say, but I don't think it would be a good idea. Also, luau's aren't cheap! I am assuming that you would be paying for everyone, not expecting them to pay.

Here are my thoughts:
1. If it was for the rehearsal dinner, fine....but NOT the reception.
2. There are lots of other people at a luau so it would not be you and your guests strictly sharing in your celebration.
3. You don't need to be into the dancing and cake cutting thing.

Why not simply have dinner with your family and friends at a lovely restaurant. Maybe there is even a private room. You don't need a cake, but have a dessert!! That way, it's more intimate and your family and friends will be able to toast you and wish you all the best. If it's at a luau, that won't happen.

Again, I think it would be perfect for the rehearsal dinner, but not the reception.

I wish you all the best! Enjoy!

I think it's a fun idea.

Don't go to a Luau, make your own Luau (you don't want strangers walking in on your party). Make sure can Ok this with the hotel where you are all staying. Be sure to incorporate live local music. Maybe you can find a band that does traditional hawaiian music and traditional wedding songs with a Hawaiian flare. Also make sure there is wide variey of catered food. (kids might get scared if there see a full pig roasting on an open flame). No one will feel jilted if there is live music and a variety of food.

If you have a group of, say 25 people, you could probably arrange for your own private luau. It might cost a bit more than the other way, though. But that way everything would be built around you. But, if you prefer the other way, with lots of other people, it's your wedding. Just enjoy your day.

A luau style private reception? YES
The whole wedding party going to one of those touristy luaus? NO

I would not feel cheated at all, I'd LOVE that!!! I think that's a great idea, I've never been to one(I live in the UK and it costs a fortune to go to Hawaii from here) so to me it sounds great!
