Does getting fired tarnish your image in the software engineering world?

I assume it would be ok to get fired since engineers get laid off all the time for no reason, but a friend says it can destroy their professional image. What do you think?

It depends on the reason for why you were fired.

Getting fired is not a good idea, for any type of job. There is a difference between getting laid off and getting fired. It is hard to explain in a future job interview why you got fired, Many questions come up like: were you stealing? were you not doing your job? are you lazy?
