This is gonna vary from child to child. Sadly they often get bored with a puppy when they realize they must give up some of thei rpersonal time to feed, walk and yep they gotta scoop.

So my answer is IF the PARENTS are going to take over teh care when kid gets bored than fine, but if mom or dad have busy lives and cannot commit to taking over than now is not the time.

You still will be involved with the care taking of a puppy. Young children, teenagers are not dependable. Puppy's need lot's of care. Like regulary potty training, preparing it's food, making sure the puppy is safe at all times. Taking it out for walks or play in your back yard. I would ask the Veterinarian.
If you are willing to put in the time, it's a life long investment. Do not go by first sight. Make a sure choice.
Read some dog books. Consider the aspect that certain breeds need certain things to make them happy. Make sure that the dog that you are selecting for your and your child, will be suitable. Too many dogs have been picked up with the wrong reasons. Hope this helps. Long time dog owner. And proud of an 8 year old Apricot Toy Poodle and a 4 month old Chihuaha.

I Got A Dog When I Was 7. So 9 Years Old Should Be Good. And I Would Get A Medium Sized Dog Like A Beagle Or Something Like That.

I think 9 is a little young if you want the child to help in caring for the animal. Puppies bite with very sharp teeth and are not well socialized when they first arrive. A very young kid may not be able to deal with that, and it's no fun for him or for the dog.
I would say 11 or 12 is better. But I didn't get my first dog until I owned my own house.

depends on how responsible the child is. If they're really responsible and really want a puppy, then I would say that you should go ahead, but make sure you make it the kid's responsibility to take care of the puppy. They need lots of attention and even like to play in the middle of the night. You really don't want to make it your problem that the child gets bored with the puppy, so I would give rewards for taking care of the puppy. It's really up to you if the nine year old gets the dog, you just have to see if their going to take care of it. Just use your judgment and be careful! Good luck and have fun:P

*I really dont think it matters. 9 would b fine. I think that because i am 12 and ever since i was a baby i have had dogs. I grew up around them. I love them so much and now have about 11 of them. A dog is a good companion and age 9 would b a good age 2 give a child one.

I'm not sure I understand your question.. but if I do, then I think 9 is old enough. If your child is responsible, and they know all the work they will have to do, then go for it. AIm for a puppy over a month old, young kids dont alwways handle very young puppies right.

I'm sorry but your question isn't clear. But kids get bored I know I did when I was little. They should dog sit with parents or volunteer @ the local animal shelter for a month. Because in the middle of homework, the dog starts barking and wants to go out. But I got my dog when I was 8. Good Luck!

When I was born, my dad had a dog already. It was a 2 yr old blue heeler mix. I loved it. Everyone shared responsibilities. If u get the dog while they are young, they grow up with the dog taking care of it and Presto! The dog will protect your child if it senses danger! The younger the better!!!

As long as you will be the one caring for the puppy, and you supervise the child with the dog, I don't think there's a 'too young' for having a dog.
