Hi-
I'm a college grad student and am renting a townhouse. I am looking for ways to add fun color and decoration to my kitchen without spending too much money and no remodeling. I have cabinets with open space at the top so that has potential.
Any ideas?

I'd chose a color that looks cool and modern for your kitchen, start there. A deep red, or cool blue could work. Then since you have an open space at the top of your cabnets you could get some christmas lights (white of course) and hang those there, or set them up there, and then get some plastic froseted glass thing and cover the top of the cabinets and it'll look like a big light going across. Getting stainless steal things look cool and modern too.

Yay! Well you can find a starting point. Like something for the wall, then work with the colors from there. I go to Hobby Lobby A LOT. They actually have really great stuff! I just put together my own spice shelf and I get ton's of compliments. They have great little glass jars there, shelves, art, etc. The major furniture items are not so great...but you can find something. Crate and Barrel had great linens and dishes and all that. Target has some cool things, too. Is there an eating area in the kitchen?

Come up with a budget. There are a lot of line items, and if money is tight, then splurge on what is most important. If your kitchen is lacking storage areas, a kitchen island may solve your problem. With the option of additional drawers, pull out shelves, and cabinets, the island is an extension to your existing casework. Ever thought you didn’t have enough room for recycling bins? Under a kitchen island makes a great accessible space because it doesn’t interfere with the main preparation area of the rest of the kitchen.

You could paint the walls a celadon green and buy complimentary dish towels, wall art and table ware. Although it depends on the colors of your cabinets. Oak and lighter wood finishes look good with green. I wouldn't do it with white cabinets.

The space above the cabinets is called the soffit.

If you have open space in the cabinet it might be cool to put some colorful pottery or dishes on display!

Behr paints offers a color called "Tart Apple" it's close to what I am envisioning!

HAVE FUN! I love doing that kind of stuff!

If you are renting you cannot paint in most rentals. Use color with your tabletop appliances, artwork, placemats, and dishes. Make everything mobile because you could be renting something else another time. Never spend money in a rental you can't take with you to another rental.
