The camera does not frame the photograph and does not know what to photograph. You need to find some reading material on how to frame and control light. Learn shutter speeds, aperture, ISOs and how they work together. You can take excellent pictures with a pin hole camera made from a shoe box if you know what you are doing.
I would get the one that feels most comfortable in your hands. That would be the same regardless of whether you are using digital or film. Brand for brand, you will not notice enough difference from one to another to make a difference

No camera, regardless of how expensive and technologically advanced, will take even a mediocre photograph much less a good or great one until it is in the hands of a competent photographer.
IMO you should first consider taking a couple of photography classes and learn about light, ISO, shutter speeds and f-stops. Learn the "Rules of Composition".
Once you have accomplished the above then you might be ready to buy a new camera.

Lots of zoom, my camera Sony Cybershot DSC-H2. 6 megapixels, 12X optical zoom, excellent 8X10 prints.
Consider for lots zoom Canon S3 IS
and Fuji S700.
Regular compacts look into:
Canon A640
Canon A630
Fuji E900
PS All the hype about megapixels, my camera is only 6 megapixels, and the prints are great.

I would always recommend Canon, but it really depends on the quality that you seek. Compact cameras are great because you can carry them anywhere you like, but because of the size of the lens and the distance from lenses to color sensor you cant expect great color range and sharpness. If you are not looking for professional camera and still you care for color range and sharpness i recommend you to buy Canon camera of Power Shot series , model according to your budget.

Fujifilm camera are fabulous. I have a Finepix Z5 and it's great. However, I don't recommend Polaroids to you, because I've had nothing but problems with them.

THE BEST CAMERAS IN THE WORLD ARE CANON, AND NIKON THAT'S WHAT THE EXPERTS USE BECAUSE THEY ARE COMPAQ FINE IMAGE ,AND YOU CAN GET CHEAP ONES ALSO BUT IF YOU WANT A BETTER ZOOM YOU HAVE TO LOOK FOR MORE THAN 4 (OPTICAL) ZOOM BETWEEN 6.0 OR 8.0 MEGA PIXELS FOR BETTER IMAGE
IF YOU WANT SOMETHING FOR THE FAMILY OR FOR FUN I WILL GO FOR 6.0 OR 7.0 BUT FOR PROFESSIONAL IT NEEDS MORE. SONY, KODAK ARE NEW WITH DIGITAL CAMERAS THAT'S WHY THEY AREN'T THAT GOOD AS CANON AND NIKON THAT HAVE MAKE CAMERAS FOR PROFESSIONALS. BETWEEN NIKON AND CANON I WILL GO FOR NIKON.
