I heard this from a Korean War vet who won a Bronze Star. I assume he meant too heavy, too powerful to be lugged around in combat

THE 30 06 CARTRIDGE WAS A FAR SUPERIOR ROUND THAN BOTH THE GERMAN 8MM MAUSER AND 7.7MM RIFLES THAT JAPAN USED.ALSO NEITHER GERMANY OR JAPAN FIELDED A SIMI AUTO IN ANY NUMBERS OR QUALITY TO THE GARAND RIFLE.ANYONE CAN BE TRAINED TO USE THIS WEAPON,AND WAS GLAD HE HAD IT WHEN THE SHOOTIN STARTED.
WEIGHT WAS NEEDED TO ABSORB THE RECOIL AND TO 8 ROUND CLIP WAS A PLUS.

THE ONLY FALL BACKS WERE

YOU COULD NOT TOP OFF THE AMMO AFTER YOU STARTED SHOOTING.

WHEN THE CLIP DEPLETED IT EJECTED WITH A NOTICEABLE CLANG NOISE.THE ENEMY SOON LEARN THIS AN ANTICIPATED THIS NOISE.

I owned one a while back... it was heavy, but I don't think it was too bad, very solid rifle... I think it was mainly a technology change, and going to a smaller caliber (create more injuries than deaths, keep the enemy busy tending to the wounded as it takes more for care than to bag). It also was only able to hold 8 rounds.

He was correct. During the Cold War there was a great deal of difficulty in equipping the military forces of nations in Asia because of the size and weight of that weapon. It had a hell of a recoil as well, despite it being a gas-fired weapon.

i would hope that the M1 Grand was not too much. i was shooting the 30-06 caliber when i was 12yrs old. it wasnt an M1 Grand gun, but was approx. the same in size and weight, and had the same caliber.
