Am going in November for 3 weeks and want to pack loads in so timings are crucial. If I can pre-book hotels on the net in advance it will keep the cost down too.

For trains:

Buses, not many resources

You will have to call once you are there or visit the bus stations. The buses are one of least up to date in the cyber world. Sorry

It would be nice to kind of know where you are planning to go. I can give you lots of info about the north and northeast but why if your going south? Sound like your headed south because you ask about ferries. (Unless you mean ferries across the Mekong)

Just to add to gbdelta's excellent answer, that there are buses leaving just about every half hour for destinations all over Thailand.. You will be Amazed.
