i've never really thought about religion that much. I've been brought up in a family of atheists, but i want to believe in God. I really need something to believe in right now. I'm in a pretty bad place emotionally + i can't trust myself anymore. I need something to trust in. Would putting my faith in God help? How do i let Him in, after years of atheism?

Prayer- To speak to nothing in order to validate ones own beliefs

Faith- To trust that something invisible is responsible for all things

Listen- Hear Jesus speak to you by allowing yourself to be open to his words- otherwise known as mild schizophrenia brought on by a self held delusion

Believe- No matter what anyone tells you and no matter what logic and reason is driving you to think, embrace belief over all common sense and rationality

Judge- Once you have gained belief, find "sinners" and judge them harshly even when your religion says not to do so

Condescend- When people around you do not believe as you do tell them they are wrong every chance you get

What I have done as a child is pray. No one taught me to pray and I have built a relationship with God through my whole life on my own. My family is Catholic but I didn't attend church a lot as a youth. I do now however. If you start praying, that is a start. Obviously, you could also attend a church or meet some responsible people to help you. If you read the bible, read Genesis and then read the Proverbs. Genesis will give you an idea of creationism and then the proverbs will let you understand how Christians should live their lives.

Once you get close to God, you will be wiser, have less anxiety, and will become a stronger person because you'll better understand your purpose now and later in life.

Lastly, when you pray do not ask for material things like I did when I was a youth. I started to understand that I needed to ask for forgiveness and to be happy and that usually takes care of things. Also, pray for other people. God loves that.

Alice,
The first thing I would do is simply pray something like this; "God, I need you in my life...I haven't believed in You until now, so I ask for Your guidance in my life, the life that you have given me. I give myself freely to the moving of Your Holy Spirit. Amen." Second, I would start reading the Bible. I would start with the Gospel of John...in Chapter 3 verse16 (3:16); God reveals how much He loves us and wants to be in a relationship with us. Then I would read the Book of Romans: Especially Romans 3: 10 (Chapter 3 verse 10); 3:23; 5:12; 5:8; 6:23; 10:13 and 10: 9 - 10. God will start to work in your life; it sounds like He already has. Pray, read, and seek...and His promise is to make Himself known to you.
Placing your faith in God, through Jesus Christ, is the most IMPORTANT DECISION YOU WILL EVER MAKE. Christ is the Good Shepherd, Psalm 23...and He can help you in any situation you may be in. Others may read this and mock or scoff...please do not let them discourage you...God has a purpose for you. I promise to pray for you and for your family. God Bless You in this great adventure. Chris

PS: To the mockers and the scoffers: One day YOU too will stand before a Just and Mighty God...YOU will give an answer for all the misguided information you have given to people seeking the TRUTH! Then, it will be too late for you, all of your fancy reasoning, your baseless theologies, and your pride will get you NOTHING! You too had better pray for forgiveness now, because 1 thing is sure, Christ is coming again in all His Glory...and the decisions you make, to accept Christ and be saved, or reject Him and perish, will determine where you spend eternity. I am not trying to SCARE you, I am not insulting you, I am telling you the TRUTH! I pray for you...laugh at me and give me thumbs down if you want too...but my eyes are open and I pray yours will be as well.

God is definately the one to put your trust into. His love is unconditional. I too have been in that place and when I really made a relationship with God, my life changed. My feelings toward people changed. A good place to start is by praying or by attending a church. A personal relationship with God will bring you to the best place you can be and you will be blessed by Him.

by accepting in JESUS as your SAVIOR and asking
for forgiveness of sin. then ask for the HOLY SPIRIT
which is given through baptism by the FATHER, SON,
and HOLY SPIRIT.
it is that easy. get a bible, New King James or Complete
Jewish Bible. read Psalms and the book of John first.
Welcome to the Family of GOD! you have made the
best of choices. let the HOLY SPIRIT lead you to a
body of believers that truly follow the word. it is not
always in a building but it could be! keep away from
the mormons and jehovah witnesses. their big trouble
with no faith.
you can home church! just don't take communion without
true repentance.

That's wonderful news! God is always calling for people to return to Him and you have been blessed enough to discover that God does exist. I'm so happy for you and I'll keep you in my prayers. Faith takes time to develop and become strong. Read the parable of the Lost Sheep in the Bible and I'm sure you'll understand where you are in your relationship with God. God bless.

I know that God does exist in some higher form of life or Spirit! Christ is real also...
I do not believe in organized religion for it only dictates to you and fills your head with nonsense!
Asking for money and telling you what to do and not do!
Religion is the soul reason for wars in our world as it is today!
If you want God to Guide you go and pray ALONE! Use and choose your own words. Talk to him as you would to someone you trust with your most inner secrets. Pray and tell God your woes and troubles and ask for help and a sign he hears you.... Prayer is the key! If that does not work then find some professional counseling...

The following links (below) should help. You start out by admitting to Jesus that you are a sinner, and asking him to forgive you. You can pray to God anytime and ask him to give you wisdom and guidance. Most people set aside an hour or so either early in the morning or late at night to talk to God, read the Bible, and quietly contemplate what they have read.

===edit===

Here are a couple more. I strongly suggest that you pay close attention to the webpages at the first two links.
You should join a Bible teaching church where they will help you grow in the faith. Since I don't know where you live, I cannot help you with that one. However, I prefer either a Southern Baptist church, a Bible Church, or a nondenominational church.

Alice, I am so glad that you realize that you have a need. You are in the best position right now to really get to know God. Here is a promise in the Bible for you...."Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you." James 4:8 So, get right in His Word and take your time with it. God will speak to you through the Bible. Here is another promise. "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. (hope in the end) Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I WILL hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and FIND me, when ye shall search for me with ALL YOUR HEART." Jer.29:11-13
Alice, these promises are for YOU. God cannot lie. (Tit.1:2)
Hold on to that. I will pray for you to know Him and that He will put His loving arms around you and never let you go.

First...disregard all the ones who disagree with you. Mocking your choice is pretty evident of what they think of God.

Now...even after years of atheism, He still waits for you to turn back towards home.

Confessing He is the Messiah, and accepting His offer of salvation is only the beginning...but what a great road to walk.
