Hi there, i live in Ecuador and in order to graduate I need to develop a business idea focusing on the marketing part of it.. I have no idea what to do, does anybody have an idea of what's working in the US or Europe right now?? Oh btw I don't want to produce anything material, I'm into the "services" business idea. Thanks for the feedback, but I don't need people who hate marketeers crawling over my question or so, please post an answer only if you have a useful comment

What is working in Europe right now is a huge surge of interest in gardening. With the slow but steady incremental rises in average temperatures, due to global warming, many people are interested in trying to find new and exotic plants for their gardens, which they could only normally expect to see on vacation, or in a botanical greenhouse.
The European economy is booming, and it is now affordable for this continent of gardeners to indulge these aspirations.
I have seen banana palms in the UK, albeit they bear a poor crop.
The export of seedlings, or even seeds, of plants that you might consider to be mundane, could be an excellent and lucrative exploitation of a local natural resource.
This is not a guess at a good idea - I have a business in horticulture, and the opportunity clearly exists.

I'm sorry but this is what I loathe about marketeers. I hope you are all reading this.

'Marketing thesis' suggests that you will end up with some form of Degree in marketing but you lack the depth of business interest, experience, acumen or imagination to come up with even a fictitious business.

Soon you will no doubt graduate and then you'll be touting yourself to businessmen expecting them to PAY you to market their business. Why? Because you suddenly understand what makes businesses work and why people buy and what the business needs to grow in the future in terms of strategic positioning and image in the face of a complex competitive environment? Because you too are a business person? Don't make me laugh!

Marketing people should really still be in school drawing pretty pictures and admiring each others pencil cases.

Don't take this personally, I wouldn't be so jaded with marketing if any of them did a good job in the first place, you'll fit right in.

By the way, I'm an operations guy incase you didn't spot it.

Thanks Lala, I appreciate your concern for my education but I do understand that marketing is more than advertising. My point is that how can you analyse a sector and position a business strategically if you don't have a business head on your shoulders. This lack of business acumen means that most marketers that I meet have no idea what they are trying to quantifyably achieve, refuse or at least avoid being held accountable for results, and count output (pretty pictures in the end reckoning) as progress and success rather than bottom line impact.

I've always thought there could be improvements in terms of recycling programs. In order to recycle, I've had to research what can be recycled, how to separate and where I may take everything. This is a time consuming process and I would assume too many people are unwilling to do this. It seems there should be a more effective and less confusing way for people to recycle. Good luck!

In response to Rupert, I think you have a lot to learn in terms of business success. I wish you the best in your journey. Marketing is an essential component of business. Without marketing professionals, consumers who are most interested in a product would not be reached effectively. Marketing professionals work with statistics and a large amount of data to determine who their target market is and the best way to communicate to them. In your response, you said marketers should 'still be in school drawing pretty pictures'. All to often, I think the layman gets advertising mixed with marketing. While it is important for the overall outcome, advertising is only a small component of marketing. Creative advertising is essential for obtaining a professional image, but advertising is not marketing. On a further note, advertising professionals are responsible for production, graphics and other areas of expertise that business owners find most beneficial.

i'm not sure if this is any use to you, but whatever your business idea be, the best and most cost effective way to market a prooduct/service these days is to use Search engine marketing. This could be a whole topic in itself in your thesis.
