Some are mean..I'll grant that...and some of the meaness comes from the non-religious as well (as evident in answers that tell grieving parents they are wasting their breath on prayer)...
Why? because there's still a lot of room for His love.
Now...at the same time, I could point out, sometimes truth is seen as meaness.... just watching court cases in which the defendent says "aww...that judge had it in for me" and never face up to what they did as wrong....well, if that person was to say "stop being mean", I'd have to disagree.

I think they should question their status because a truly religious person should be peaceful and not hurt people. But I also think that all people should be like that regardless of what religion you believe in. It’s called being humane.

because they see it as their duty to observe the 1st commandment and defend their chosen god.
when others see true religion is helping widows and orphans like even neanderthals practiced. they didn't worship italians or jews but practiced true religion long before someone perverted good practice to try and rule the world through religion.

Puff is right... But for the ones who ARE rude and mean, it seems to have to do with their self-assigned roles and arbiters and judges for the rest of us. It seems to have something to do with what they call their "righteousness."
In the end, though, they aren't righteous or Christian at all. They're just ... rude and mean.
