As of right now my husband and I want it to be a suprise. We would buy everything in neutral colors to start out and not end up with everything blue or everything pink at the baby shower. Do you want to know before the birth and why or why not?

About ten years ago, there was a coworker who was having a baby. I bought some unisex baby stuff at Target, one of which was a little baseball player outfit. Another coworker said to me "she's having a girl," as though my gift was inappropriate.

A couple months later, she had a boy. Most of the girly stuff she received had to be sent back. Not sure if the doctor misread the sonogram, or if the boy was just hung like a girl.

The point of this story is that it's nice to know what you're having, but you could make a big mistake if your doctor goofs it up. I can understand why some parents would like to wait and find out at the birth. It's somewhat romantic, and sort of old-fashioned.

Our grandson is 5 1/2 months old. My daughter and son-in-law opted not to find out the sex ahead of time. I, personally, like to be surprised when it comes to the birth of a baby. My niece had an ultrasound, but the baby was not turned to the point to reveal if it was a boy or a girl so she had to wait until the birth to find out. My own 4 kids are now 28, 26, 22, and 10. With the older 3, having an ultrasound was nearly unheard of (unless your doctor suspicioned a serious problem). Our youngest was a surprise baby and due to some high risk complications, I had 12 ultrasounds with her, but still opted not to find out ahead of time. I think it is exciting to find out at the birth if it is a boy or a girl. For our youngest, we bought basic diapers and t-shirts and then our older kids threw us a shower after the baby came.

My husband and i decided to be surprised by our first child's gender. I'm very glad we waited and didn't find out. On the other hand with our second and third babies we decided that we needed to know because it was practical. We had a girl and wanted to know if we need to go buy some boy things or if the new babies could wear some of big sisters clothing. So far we haven't needed to buy very much we have all three girls.

Congratulations and good luck to you!

I have a theory that people that find out the gender prior to the birth have a preference for the gender. Thats how it was with several of my friends, and myself at my last one. I did not find out the gender with my first two pregnancies - and I had two boys. With my third pregnancy, I did find out - it was a girl, and I so wanted one! If for some reason I had another child (no plans to) I would not find out again though - there is nothing like that surprise after a long labor of finding out the gender! Good luck!

I waited to find out with all my six children, and if I have any more, I'll wait with them too. I bought all gender neutral items, and I'm not really fussed either way about putting pink on a boy or blue on a girl.

I like the surprise element...I like that moment of checking baby, and going "Wow it's a girl/boy". I didn't want to know beforehand at all.

I wanted to know. I think it would have been convenient to know whether to buy boy's or girl's clothes. However, I never found out because I did not want ultrasound. I've heard there is a blood test, but it is not available in the U.S.
We always got a surprise. I usually guessed wrong.

My wife's due in two months and we don't know yet. Our last child was always in the wrong position every time we got an ultrasound so we never found out even though we wanted to. This time, it's just kind of nice letting it be a surprise.

Yeah lots of people do. I think it's exciting to wait and see if it's a boy or a girl, but personally i'd like to know before hand so i can buy lot's of cute stuff for my little boy or girl.
