You really don't even need a four year degree or any degree to design houses in some areas because not all municipalities require stamped drawings for permits on residential construction. I am finishing a two year degree in construction and many of my classmates have been hired to draw and design houses and other buildings. Most of them work directly under a licensed engineer or architect and they draw and sometimes design what the engineer or architect tells them to. From what I have seen the licensed architects and engineers don't really do any of the drawing because they have people with two year degrees and/or drafting experience working for them.

You want to be an architect. Architects are a type of engineer, and the universities that have architecture colleges are almost always associated with the engineering colleges, with lots of 'cross' courses that are required for both architecture and engineering.

As for a recommendation of a particular school, my alma mater, Washington State University has an architecture college, but whether or not it is for you -- you'd have to do the research. There are lots of college-rating websites and magazines out there.

You might want to look into an Architectural program if you want to design a house. If you want to design the actual structure of the house you should looking into civil or structural engineering.
