Religion or spirituality was not invented anymore than love was invented.
However the people that began to take advantage of human beings tendency to be passive toward the unknown was and is utilized by people that are aware gods do not exist.

Religion could hardly have been invented by a 'religious' person because that person was not religious until he invented religion.

No - atheists are too kind to invent a religion, as they would know the harm it would do to humanity. Religion is very possebly invented by power hungry sociopaths.

If you rephrased that as "If the idea of God was invented by humans, were they atheists?" then the answer would be yes. Because nobody before them ever believed in god. So technically, everybody was an atheist, until people caught onto religion. Its like catnip for the ignorant.

No, Not by Atheists. Religion evolved from the God Yahweh's followers who misinterpreted and mistranslated His scientific based instructions in the first five books found in The Bible, Torah and The Dead Sea Scrolls. Not knowing science at that time and even up until today we have given these scientific instructions a non-scientific religious translation and interpretation. A new scientific discovery about this mistake made by man will soon force us to rewrite these five books of the Bible back into the scientific text God originally wrote them in.

That is the best question of the month for, by reason of the atheist claim that there are no gods or creators, then by default atheists are ultimately to blame for all religions, and thus for all the suffering of the human race.

There is no "if" here. Religion WAS invented. I believe it was invented as a mechanism of control.

When I was a small boy I remember hearing something that I have never forgotten -"Religion was invented by the rich people to keep the poor people from killing them."

You know how the Spider-Man movies have writers? You don't think they really believe that stuff do you? Others might believe it, but the people who write the stuff know better. If you read through Paul's epistles, you'll find that he's one clearly deceptive character, admittedly so. If he really believed that God was the god of the Jews, then he would not have lied to gain believers. He would believe that his god's truth would be self evident, and would not worry about converting people.
