When hunting with a shotgun, saftey is paramount.
An air rifle will kill a man if shot in the head, a shot gun will do far more damage than that.
Over hear in the uk we have a little saying when game hunting, which should be demonstraghted at all times

All the pheasants ever bread wont make up for one man dead

A 12 Gage shot gun if your using 2 3/4 shells, goes around 150 yards, and yes it's enough to kill someone, at close range.
Shot is one thing but a slug most definitely will have fatal effects. Always make sure you field of view is clear for the 150 yard distance. Do not make the mistake of pointing your weapon at a live human being. always keep the guns safety on until your ready to take the shot at a bird or a deer. Take the hunter safety course. It's free in most states and only a few dollars to learn some valuable lessons. Looks like Dick Cheney could use a refresher course . http://www.nrahq.org/education/guide.asp

I am unaware of a .12 caliber shotgun, but if you mean 12 gauge, the answer is yes. 12 gauge is the typical bore size recommended for a home defense shotgun. They are very well suited for it because of the amount of shot that a 2 3/4" or 3" mag can project. The range of shot size from 000 buck to #12, make it effective for everything from small birds upto human and supposedly bear-sized targets.

I wouldn't worrry about accidentally shooting anyone as long as you always practice the rule "know your target and what is beyond it".

Okay - I don't want to be mean or anything ... but you stated that you're hunting & killing DEER with that gun, right??

Last I checked, deer are a helluva lot tougher than people (higher muscle density... larger mass... etc.), so it's a pretty good conclusion that your 12-gauge shotgun can indeed kill people.

And there is ALWAYS a risk of killing someone by accident with a firearm if you're not careful.

As said before it's actually 12 gauge, not calibur. But 12 gauge shotguns are actually one of the most dangerous types, the lower the gauge number the more power it has behind it. 12 gauge shotguns are very dangerous and when not in use should be kept in a safe position whether that's down-range or in a case.

Ok first of all a .12 shot gun would have barrell about 2/3 of a BB gun!!! I think what you mean Is a 12 gauge. and in that case Most defenatlly YES.but the deadly rage is limited to a much shorter rage than that of a rifle...all depending on the load and shot size of the shell.

most definitely. If you haven't taken a hunter safety program most states require one before you hunt.

A shotgun is deadly at close range 0-75 yards. In appropriate firearm handling is deadly Treat every weapon as if if were loaded and know that its use has the power to kill or main what it is pointed at.

A .12 gauge even with birdshot can be lethal depending on the range. Short answer is: Yes, a .12 gauge shotgun can kill people.

Just for your info., the vice-prez used a .28 gauge which is puny, but still lethal depending on the load and distance.

Best.

Guns are made to expel a projectile or many projectiles at high speeds, (up to 4000 FPS) and anything that is hit by those projectiles will suffer massive injury.
That said, if you do not know much about guns you should (as others have correctly stated) get yourself to a Hunter Safety or Firearm Safety class and learn all you can about guns and safety before you even consider getting or shooting a gun. They are not toys, they are machines that don't have brains and don't care what is in front of their barrels.
They will shoot anything the human points them at.

A 12 guage shotgun is perhaps the deadliest choice of weapons for home defense. It's about 73 caliber (watch that terminology!), and that's an awfully big hole. That's why safety is always stressed.
