The chariot symbolizes the body--and perhaps you could also say that it symbolizes the world. Sri Krishna (the incarnation of the redemptive, world-sustaining principle of the Hindu trinity, Vishnu) holds the reins and commands the chariot (that is, the body or world or universe) and the horses drawing it. I think the horses are supposed to symbolize the 5 senses. I think there is a stanza or 2 where this symbolism is discussed in the Bhagavad Gita.

Unfortunately--and strangely--no religions other than Christianity tend to be discussed on the R&S site. Everyone into Hinduism or Buddhism has to post them in the mythology category with the silly kids who repeatedly ask Qs about ghosts and Ouija boards (which also have nothing to do with mythology).
