It's been turned into a term of thinly veiled racism. By attacking Zionism, racists can pretend they're not actuallt ani-Semitic. It's still used a lot within Israel, though.
People say that Zionism is an ideology of evil and so on, but it's really not. It's a perfectly sound idea with one fatal oversight.

I saw some ultra orthodox Jews making some interesting comments about Zionism, that the state of Israel was in existence against the will of God, as the Messiah had not come, only the Zionists.
I guess we get our news from different sources.
BTW I haven't seen or heard a racist skinhead in a long time.

Perhaps this is why Moroccan Jews fled to Israel soon after its creation.
In 1864, around 500 Jews were killed in Marrakesh and Fez in Morocco. In 1869, 18 Jews were killed in Tunis, and an Arab mob looted Jewish homes and stores, and burned synagogues, on Jerba Island. In 1875, 20 Jews were killed by a mob in Demnat, Morocco; elsewhere in Morocco, Jews were attacked and killed in the streets in broad daylight.
The massacres of Jews in Muslim countries continued into the 20th century. Martin Gilbert wrote that 40 Jews were murdered in Taza, Morocco in 1903. The Jewish quarter in Fez was almost destroyed by a Muslim mob in 1912.

Zionism is NOT fundamentalist Judaism, as someone has yet again incorrectly stated.
'Zionism' simply means a belief in the right of the Jewish homeland to exist. That's all.
I am a zionist; I lived in Israel for a while and I loved it there; the people were amazing.
There are 22 Islamic countries.
There is one tiny Jewish country; Israel represents less than 0.01 per cent of the Middle East.
And contrary to what people seem to think, Arab violence towards Jews goes back way before the creation of Israel.
EDIT SUZANNE L
Careful, your ignorance is showing. Firstly, I resent your saying that Jews 'play the anti semitism card'. State your 'evidence' for this. I am Jewish and I have NEVER known any Jew do that or even think of doing it.
You might like to know that when the first reports of the German concentration camps emerged, people accused us then also of 'playing the racism card'. Nice.
And for you to say that Zionism does not represent the Jewish faith - you are talking rubbish. Do you really think that you are an expert on what Jews think? I think you know this is a silly assertion to make.
The vast majority of Jews are zionists. We, more than most, need a safe homeland because as you will know if you've ever glanced at a history book, in all other countries, Jews have not fared well. We were kicked out of EVERY Muslim state, bar Iran. England expelled us also. As did many other nations.
As for saying that zionism is a block to peace..... If that's true, then why in Gaza, where there are no Israelis any longer, why are the Palestinians killing each other left, right and centre???
You have made several foolish comments. Get your facts straight in future and spare yourself embarrassment.

Zionism is the hope that Jews have always had, to return to the homeland that they were kicked out of two thousand years ago. It is their undeniable right to be able to return to their home country.
EDIT
"truth now: you can't return to a country that no longer exists, that is of course until the UK and US brings it back into existence, right?"
What an illogical argument. Obviously when the Jews were kicked out of their country, their country was dismantled by their conquerors. This has no effect on the right of a nation of people to return to their homeland.
If the Jews don't have the right to return to their home country because their country stopped existing when they were kicked out of it, then the Palestinians don't have a right to return to Israel either, since they never had a country there at any point in time.

I'm not a Muslim and certainly not a skinhead.
Zionism is one of the major obstacles to peace in the middle East. They are not even religious fundamentalists. They are neo-conservative nationalists and imperialists. They do NOT represent the Jewish faith.
Of course they play on people's ignorance by playing the "anti-semitic" card.
In fact many orthodox jews speak out against it.

Do other people even know what it means? I DOUBT IT VERY HIGHLY.
Paperback_writer YOUR IGNORANCE is showing now. You have not been kicked out of Morocco - you guys left (most of you) when Israel was formed. Nobody pushed you out and there are still Jews there. Did you not know that or are you playing the ashkenazi against the sephardic Jews card?
truth now: you can't return to a country that no longer exists, that is of course until the UK and US brings it back into existence, right?
