YES! Its the same as a pizza guy or a someone who gets you your coffee. Given its not the same amount of service as a waitress in a sit down restaurant but they are still servicing you. Now their tips should be about the same as what you'd give a pizza delivery guy and based entirely on how long it took to get it to you, their attitude and so on.

You do not have any obligation to tip at Sonic under most commonly accepted rules of etiquette. The rules that apply here are as follows:

1) There is no tipping at fast food restaurants; and

2) At restaurants with limited service, such as buffets, you should tip between 50 cents and a dollar per person, per table, for the person clearing (or delivering) your food and/or beverages.

Because Sonic is essentially a hybrid between a fast food restaurant and a "limited service" restaurant, you can be within the correct rules of etiquette either way. If you are so compelled, then tip 50 cents to a dollar for each person in your car.

You should tip anywhere that you are being served. Service people depend upon tips as they aren't even paid minimum wage! Besides waiters and waitresses you should also tip your hairdresser, nail technician, the people who pack and move you, TV/VCR repair techs, anybody who provides you with a service. At a place where I wait on myself (cafeteria style) but have a wait person bring me my drink and anything that I might have forgotten (silverware and stuff like that) I tip 10%, 15%-20% at a full service restaurant. In addition, I give my hairdresser and nail tech presents at Christmas. Pizza delivery people should be tipped $1 for each pizza they deliver.

Please try to remember that these people work for their tips. and what does TIPS stand for? To Insure Prompt Service. If I don't get service with a smile, my tip goes down from 20% to 15%. If I get just so-so service it goes down to 10%. And if I get crappy service I have aluminum coins that say "You get what you give. Give nothing, get nothing. This coin is worth exactly that: Nothing." I have given out maybe 10 of these in 20 years!!!

I most especially hate it when I, a woman, go in and sit down only to be ignored because a lot of service personnel think that a woman alone does not tip. I used to be a waitress and I know what back breaking work it is and I usually leave a tip according to how I'm treated.

All I ask is a smile and decent service. I realize that their feet are probably hurting. Maybe they have a backache. But I still expect to be welcomed with a smile and, if busy, a "I'll be right with you." If they can't give me at least that much then they need to clock out and go home.

My two cents for what it's worth.

When I was in college a friend of mine worked at Sonic and she said that they did expect tips. But that was 10 years ago before credit cards were so common. So I have made it a practice that if I pay cash I will let them keep any coins I get back. But usually I pay with a credit card and they don't put a tip line on the receipt so they don't get a tip.

I don't think so. I've only been to a Sonic establishment twice but isn't that their job? If a customer parks to eat there, then the food is delivered to their car. Whatever hourly salary they receive part if not the main job duty is for them to provide that service. I realize their wages are probably quite low, but isn't that the case for grunts at most fast food establishments? I
wouldn't feel obligated to do so and they shouldn't make you feel that way. If you feel extra generous once in awhile and their service is really good, then go ahead. I don't even think the staff in Starbucks should get a tip. It's their job! For some, working for low wages is an incentive to do what they need to in order to get a better paying job.

Hello everybody, my name is Lauren and I am a Sonic car hop. I am a skating car hop and we get paid $5 and hour and minimum wage is $7.25, meaning, we have to make up the rest in tips. Walking car hops only get $4 an hour. We don't "expect" anyone to tip, it might be common courtesy or whatever, but we don't expect it. Plenty of people come in and don't tip. So don't feel obligated to. But if we don't make enough tips to cover the rest of our salary, it come out of the managers pocket and our hour get cut.

If somebody is hired to bring you something, you tip.

Tip means "To Insure Promptness." Waiters (including the carhop kind) serve well in order to earn a good tip. They make less money per hour because the boss believes they are going to be tipped, so if you don't tip, you're taking money out of the waiter's pocket.

If you park and eat there and the car hopper actually waits on you, yes.
If you just order at the speaker, and pull forward, like at any other drive thru, and the worker just walks a few yards to hand you your order, then no.

I have worked in food service for over twenty years, and believe me many employees think they should be tipped for showing up to work-well,almost.

It's gotten out of hand, really.

i've got not been to Sonic - i've got googled it and seem the type of meals they serve - it appears that evidently plenty like the type of junk/quickly-meals you will discover at McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, Wendy's.... etc... in straightforward terms on rollerskates. the region I regarded at has a great form of %. of the objective-shopper - at a wager: 25 years and youthful. i might wager that they do no longer tip at Sonic for a similar reason they do no longer tip at McDonalds - coz, they're no longer likely predicted to. quickly-meals served interior a bag into your individual vehicle has a plenty lesser fee in comparison to appropriate table-service. Your cousin has a job at this place - he must be relatively stable at it (i do no longer think of it fairly is an relatively annoying job, till it rains)
