Hey all,

Ok, today I was pulled over by the police for having a "fading" tail light :? and I found it to be an interesting experience. First of all, I had to provide as much identification as possible, as my driving licence wasn't enough. I then had to prove my vehicle was insured, otherwise I risked having it taken off me (lol), which was easily done, I was then finger printed on the road side, followed by being breathalised.

Have you even been pulled over by the police, and what was your experiences?

I did find it all too excessive for the apparent offence, of which nothing came of it anyway. It's the first time I've been pulled over, so was shocked at what was required. I was coming home from work, too, so well dressed and smart looking, but a little tired. I hope I never get pulled again, though after that experience.

last time i got pulled over by a cop it was because i was driving a small black truck (and it was by 5 cops)....i know what your thinking...something along the lines of "what how is it possible to get pulled over for that??". That's what i thought also, the cop comes up to my window and the first thing he says to me is "hey i need to search your vehicle" of course this is the time where i bring up my right to privacy and that in order to search my personal property I'm going to have to see a warrant (which luckily they didn't get) but anyways long story short, just 5 min. before i went through the area where i got pulled over there were gunshots fired out of a small black truck, they told me they need to look in my glove box just to make sure there wasn't a gun in there. Luckily I'm pretty harmless looking and an older cop came up and intervened saying "Look at this kid he doesn't look like he would shoot anyone....sorry for wasting your time sir have a good night" To this day the cop who came up and told me sorry for wasting my time is pretty much my hero, i didn't have a gun but i know they wouldn't have passed up the opportunity to slap me with a huge fine for other stuff they might have found in my car.

The first time was in about 1960 when they were stopping all traffic to check for stolen turkeys. All they did was look in the boot. Second time, I was parked and with my girl friend. They just wanted to make sure she was OK and not being forced to be in the car (Both of us thought this was very good policing). Third time I was pulled over for doing 50mph what they said was a 30 area. I explained that the road we were on was not subject to any limit (before national limits came in ) They checked with HQ by radio and apologised and wish me a safe journey. No more for many years until retired to Spain. Here I have been breath tested twice (they don't need an excuse here they just stop every car and test the driver.)

I've been pulled over a few times. I use to work as a delivery driver. The first time I was pulled over I think was a few years ago. The Police van was behind me and we were driving over humps so didn't see the headlights flashing and because they were so close I didn't see the flashing blue lights. They put on their sirens and I pulled over. They asked me all sorts of questions like why didn't you stop I explained about not being able to tell they were flashing their headlights because I thought that was happening because they were going over the humps. They asked me other questions like "is this your car? Is it insured? What colour is your hair? Are those track suit bottoms your wearing?" They were writing it all down lol. They did a check on my car on the insurance and everything turned out to be ok. I think second time they puled me over because one of my headlights weren't working and third time my exhaust pipe was making a loud noise that got worse. I had to get it fixed. I also almost got caught by them when I was speeding why I was on delivery. They passed me and I saw in my mirror that they were turning around so I quickly turned into another road and parked behind a garage near someones driveway, shut the engine and lights off and ate some Pizza for 5 minutes. I don't speed anymore. lol

Yes my road fund licence had run out and I hadn't noticed, no really, I had just moved house and the reminder hadn't reached me. I was fined £80 including costs, the next person with exactly the same offence only got a £30 fine, and it was my first offence.

License and Proof of Insurance are standard requests - they were not picking on you at all. How would they know if you're breaking the law by not having insurance otherwise? They also almost always ask for the car's registration. I have been pulled over once or twice (*cough*) in my 20 year driving career and can tell you, sounds pretty routine.

the fingerprinting seems a bit excessive. thats never happened to me. normally they do ask for your license and insurance and registration, and that's it, unless they think you might have been drinking. my friend had a really bad experience where they made her get out of her car, do a breathalizer, and the whole sobriety test (she hadn't been drinking at all). But the dumbest time I was pulled over was when the cop said he pulled me over for not stopping for a full five seconds at the stop sign. and no where in the drivers manual does it say that you have to stop for FIVE seconds. I happened to have a drivers manual (b/c i had to get my license renewed) and I showed it to him. He just got mad and gave me a ticket anyway.

sound kinda fishy to me, i have been pulled over many times and never had that much of an issue. I guess alot depends on whether it's state local or county police and such. I have never been fingerprinted on the road, you might want to check into that to be sure it's not something crazy.

hmmm...fingerprinted? The only reason I would fingerprint someone on a traffic stop is if I gave them a citation and they didn't have their drivers license on them...because for all I know they provided me with the wrong name, and the fingerprints will clear that up. In Florida, your tail lights have to emit a red light a distance of 1000 feet.....

Sounds to me like they just didn't like the look of you and used the taillight as an excuse to pull you over.

From your spelling I'm guessing you're not American, so my experiences with my local police are not likely to be relevant to you. :) But as a general rule, you want to try not to look like someone worth hassling, which for young people (which I'm guessing you are, since this is your first traffic stop) usually means don't look like a stoner, and don't plaster your car with counterculture bumper stickers. I don't know if you do those things or not, but the point here is to look respectable and law-abiding and not give the cops any reason to single you out.
