I am 19 and plan on joining the Navy. Question is, does the Navy have an Aerial Gunner position like the Airforce, you know riding in a SH-60 Seahawk hanging out the door with an M60 or Mini-Gun or something similar? I was really interested in this Job. If not i still plan on joining and being a Master at Arms, K9 officer or Ordanceman.

I'm joining the Navy so naturally I have to support the Navy, however, both jobs would be equally awesome. I must say, keep in mind how difficult it is going to be to get into those positions. Air Force means you'll be deployed more. Most aerial gunners are shipped out since there's not a lot of good ones. Rescue swimmers stay on shore duty most of the time which means you probably won't be deployed. (more family time) In both you get to be in helicopters, one just requires that you jump out of them (rescue swimmer). I would also take into consideration, as an Aerial Gunner, you will be shot at. You have a higher chance of death. You said you wanted combat, but Rescue Swimming won't really give you that component. I must say though, there will be no lack of excitement and self gratification. Save someone. See what it feels like. Personally I prefer saving people over shooting people (personal preference) but that choice is yours to make. Putting that aside, the benefits are better for a rescue swimmer because you get more time off (because you're not deployed). Pay grades are something to look at, you'll have to ask recruiters about that. There's so much outdated information on the Internet about the military it's ridiculous. As far as bunking, the Navy does a great job with that. The spaces look confined and small but it's really all you need (it's not really all that small) and there are compartments under the bed. Go onto the Navy website and watch the videos. I don't know much about Air Force living conditions but I have buddies in the air force and they say that it's pretty good. Good luck making your choice. Take your ASVAB and talk to recruiters. Make sure you are completely informed before making a choice. Good luck.

I don't think aerial gunner is a distinct Navy career field. I think the gunners in the Navy are aircrewmen from a variety of aviation fields. Be sure to get a guaranteed rating when you sign up. The Navy often pitches going in as an undesignated seaman, fireman (engineering) or airman. This gets you four-six weeks of general training after boot camp. It gets pitched as enabling you to "look around and decide what you want to do." It doesn't work out that way unless you are an unusually strong-willed person able to resist pressure fromyour chiefs to strike for a particular rating. You are much better off deciding what you want to do and enlisting for that field. If you're interested in working with weapons, take a look at the Gunner's Mate (GM) rating.

I don't believe the Navy has a rate that is specifically an Aerial Gunner. You can see Navy career information here: http://www.navy.com/careers/ Additionally, you can discuss your interests with a recruiter. They can answer your questions.

K9 officer or Ordanceman these two rates do not exist they are the responsibility of the MA (Master at Arms). I was not an airmen nor was I really firnds with a lot of them so I am not totally sure but I don't think that there was a specific rate for chopper gunners like this most liekly I would assume this would be a special qualification for either a GM or MA.

that is an NEC, not a rating in and of itself. you have to go Aircrew. you won't get it going MA. AO you might have a shot..maybe.

and K9 handlers are enlisted, not Officers.. and you can't get it until you are an E5 usually.
