he being the almighty authoritarian, is the quintessential do-as-I-say-not-as-I-do person, has been on the same job for 24 years and is a good provider . However, he is inflexible, sarcastic, nit-picker, makes very rude comments about complete strangers, says HE is the boss of the family, and demands respect, yet he'll down 6 beers at a ballgame, and then drive home, he smokes pot daily, and his two daughters are now well aware of this. If you were a 16 yr old girl, would you have respect for him?

not a chance. while we are born and brought up larning to respect our parents and elders, it can be lost through behaviors and would need to be earned back. no one is an automatic boss just b/c they are a man and bring home a paycheck.

I wouldn't have respect for him, no, but that doesn't mean you can treat him poorly. He is your father, and you do not know his situation, no matter how much you think you may know (and since you're 16, I imagine you think you know quite a bit).

Think about his good qualities. He is a good provider, which he does out of love. You think men will gett up and go to a job they most likely don't like for 24 years if they don't have a sense of love and responsibility for their family?

Bottom line, just because you don't like his personality doesn't mean you can look down on him. I believe children should respect their parents. DOesnt' mean they have to agree with them or even like them, but while you live in his home and he provides for you, he deserves at least a little.

Respect is earned not just given. It sounds like he is a hypocrite and an ***. If he doesn't change his ways, he will risk ruining the relationship with his children forever. Being a good parent is about setting a good example. Not to say we're perfect and don't make mistakes. We do, then we admit them and do our best not to let it happen again.

I disagree that respect always has to be earned....I was taught to respect especially my parents, and anyone older than me or in a position of authority...there is a difference between agreeing with, obeying and treating someone with respect...this father has some bad and illegal habits, but should his daughters treat him with respect, yes...always...
