I know someone that needs surgery for cancer, but does not have insurance to pay for it. This is the situation:

He has a lot of debt right now. It is mostly due to losing his business last year. However, in addition he also has to pay a mortgage and his children's school loans. He said his current job (which does not offer insurance) pays a salary that would not be considered low income. Last year, his income tax forms showed a net income significantly in the negatives due to losing the business. Would these circumstances allow someone to be eligible for medicaid?

I read that assets need to be considered too, but I'm don't know about those details. I would imagine his assets would be significantly offset by the the loss of his business.

Thanks for any input. I posted this same question in a different category on Yahoo Answers as well, but I'm hoping to get some additional feedback here too ...

my brother was very ill (hospice) and in order to get medicaid he had to agree to sign over his trailer and possessions after his death to the government. He didn't want to do this and somehow he got on other govt programs to assist him, but he didn't need surgery.

Here is a place that can help with drugs. Montel advertises it. They connect you up with drug companies that help with low cost or free meds.

Call the American Cancer Society and see what programs that they might have or know about to help pay the bills. Also ask them about support groups for cancer patients and their families.

From past experience, it doesnt matter what your income is but the only way an adult (except for pregnancy) will even be considered for medicaid is if they have children living with them that are under the age of 18.

You can fill out the enrollment form and state your monthly income. You have to provide either paystubs or copy of income tax return for last year. Your friend may be eligible for medicaid if he meets the requirements but may be required to meet a spenddown before he can receive benefits. Almost like a health insurance deductible.

If the Dr. declares him temorarily disabled due to the cancer
he might qualify. As long as he has an income and any assets
he will be over limit.I am only familiar with GA medicaid laws
but it seems a person has to be destitute before medicaid will
approve them.

Check out www.socialsecurity.gov or maybe it's www.socialsecurity.org and get the information you want. He would probably have to apply. If rejected, then he would have to get an attorney that specializes in social security laws. Good luck to him.
