I agree with the first answer regarding his excellent use of color and texture. Of all of the painters usually called "Abstract Expressionists", I like his work the best.

For anybody who has not seen his work in person, I recommend withholding judgment until you get a chance to do so. It is very difficult to get a sense of his painting from a computer screen.

I did go to a Rothko exhibition of his work in London, although a lot of people were admiring it, the paintings never did anything for me, The ones I saw were just red and didn't look any different to any wall that could of been painted in any colour.
He did commit suicide in the end, he was quite a troubled soul.

There is a strong sense of spirituality in his works. And they need to be seen for real in order to fully appreciate them, as they are huge. Reproductions on a computer screen or in a book don't do them justice.

Am not overly impressed by them.
But good luck with your thesis.
The foundation part of the OU course, Introduction to humanties covers these paintings. It might be worth trying to get feedback from them. [My daughter has just completed the module]

artwork. The innovative technique. Love. color. pastime. Nature. Magic. words. types. photos. track. popularity. thoughts's eye. Innovation. the possibility is what particularly inspires me. it would sound particularly Polly-Anna, yet... Polly-Anna your face! :)
