Which is the best operating system to get. A windows operating system or an Apple. I want to know which offers more security and easiness to the costumer. I would like something that is like they say plug and play. To the point where I do not worry about frequent computer problems like common error messages.

So you want to know which operating system will be the easiest to use, take care of, update, and will be the most secure, right?

In that case, I would probably choose Apple. They've put a lot of effort into usability, and there are few, if any, viruses for Apple computers.

However, if you choose Apple, be aware of what you might be missing:

Software - There's a TON of Windows-based software and by comparison a lot less for Apple. Apple has software for just about anything, but PCs have lots of software, so you in most cases you have a choice.

Cost - It's cheaper to purchase, maintain, and upgrade a PC. You also have a lot more options in the type of hardware you can get.

Interoperability - This isn't as big of a problem as it used to be, but most of the world uses Windows and sometimes it's hard to get Windows or PCs to talk to Macs or open files created with Mac software.

If those things don't bother you (and they probably won't) then I'd stick with a Mac.

I have a computer at work that has Windows Vista and I HATE it! Microsoft is trying very hard to be Apple without being Apple. Vista looks a lot like Apple's OS but when I started working with it, I noticed many differences. Apple is very intuitve, very plug and play. Microsoft requires a lot of patches and upgrades. It's security system is more annoying than helpful. Apple continually does it right and Microsoft wishes it could.

Actually Linux is the best.

Most viruses are designed to mess with Windows-based systems.

Linux can be free (Freespire, Ubuntu, Debian) or you can pay for Linspire or RedHat.

Because I'm an old guy, I'm going to go with Linspire so I can use Windows-based software I've become familiar with.

Windows glitches are getting real tired. I'm not going to ante up for Vista after having Windows 3.0, 95, 98 and XP and never having an OS that runs as reliably as my 40 year old Chevy.

I have Apple OS X and Windows XP, and the Apple OS is much easier to work with (i.e. not worry about!). All my peripherals work perfectly, with a minimum amount of effort from me. However, I have read reviews at MacWorld that have been critical of the preview items from the Apple update, called Leopard.

If you are concerned about security, your best bet is Vista. If you are concerned with compatibility and errors, your best choice is XP for at least the next year or two. Once SP1 is out for Vista, it should be far better than XP in all ways.
