Your vet is right - dry food isn't good for any cat anywhere. And, no, dry food will not clean their teeth! If that was the case, why is that you can eat nice, crunchy chips or cereal, and your teeth aren't clean afterward? Canned, homemade cooked, premade raw or homemade raw is much better for your cat. Science Diet is awful. Premium canned brands include things such as Wellness, Innova, Nature's Variety, Merrick and many others anymore. They're hard to find in most big pet stores. PetCo carries Natural Balance, which is pretty good. Pet Supplies Plus carries many of the premium brands. You may have local natural pet food stores, and sometimes you can find great brands at a feed store. PetsMart, I think, finally has one brand that's not too bad. I don't buy it so I can't remember the name. You can order a lot of these, at a good price, online. You want to look for an identifiable, decent meat source as the first ingredient at least. No by-products! You can switch your cats. The switch from dry to canned is usually fairly easy since the cats love canned. I switched mine early this year to raw, and that took a lot more work. However, cats can be kibble junkies! If so, then gradually reduce the kibble and up the amount of canned until you can one day pull all the kibble and get it out of the house. Never, ever leave it out all day. Feed your cats two or three times a day. Leave it out for 15-20 minutes. If they're still trying to eat, don't pull the poor cat's plate from under him/her! But, once a cat walks away, pull that plate and refrigerate the food for another time. Have patience, a sense of humor and the belief that you're doing a good thing for your cats' health. Good luck!

Doubtful. Cat food regulations are really not what they should be....they're nowhere near as stringent as for humans. So the food company was probably well within their rights in producing inferior food. And there's tons of it out there. Science Diet, Iams, Meow Mix, Purina, ad nauseum.

Unfortunately, I'm not a marketing genius and I don't know how - outside of Y!A of course - to get the word out there about how to identify good and bad cat foods. Or to even let people know that there is such a thing.

Until I ended up with a fat cat with digestive issues, I didn't have a clue either. Was that my fault? Did I know I should actively learn about cat nutrition? Well, yes and no. I just thought you got a cat, you fed them, took them to the vet once per year, and that was it. I know better now, but how do you make people aware of the fact that there are things they're ignorant about?

Sure you can sue, but you would never win, you would be hard pressed to prove that the company knew the food was likely to cause kidney stones.

Most Kidney stones are idiopathic, meaning they happen spontaneously for an obscure or unknown cause.

You can help your cat by making sure it drinks lots of water and has diet low in protein, nitrogen and sodium. Also keep your cat away from food with a high grain content.

Yes, it's awful that companies sell pet food that can harm animals - just look at what happened this year with all the contaminated wheat gluten from China - but proving it is another thing.

This is why it is so important to feed your dog or cat a high quality food, not supermarket junk that is mostly meal and corn fillers.
First ingredient in dry should always be meat, with no corn meal - something like Canidae.

It is far cheaper, in the long run, to feed your pet decent food than to pay large vet bills later on - as you have unfortunately found out.

NO!!! You have about a thousand choices of what to feed your cat and you made the choice to feed something cheap. Deal with it.
People need to stop trying to sue over everything!!!!

And the cheap food doesn't make all cats that eat it sick....if it did they would not be allowed to sell it.

I guess technically, you CAN sue them. It is a right in this country. I doubt you will be the winner. It is like the McDonalds defence. You eat it, get cornary artery disease, and sue. Because of course, McDonalds is FORCING you to eat their food!!!!!
Personal responsibility goes a LONG way. Look at the sentence you vet stated "we started feeding him the cheap food". YOU fed him the cheap food. Not the company. YOU.

No, but if you graduated from school you might want to consider suing them.
