My boyfriend ships out for basic in early November, I think November 11 to be exact. I was wondering if he will be allowed to come home in December for Christmas and for how long? Also i was wondering if anyone had ideas for christmas presents?

NO it does not you get the day off but that is it, you continue on, it's the same for New Years. The only branch that shuts down during Basic/Boot/BMT/Recruit Training is the Army for Christmas Exodus. Now if you were in A School then it will go on Stand down for the holidays but you don't have to take leave at all if you don't want to for it is deducted from the leave you have earned.

No one is ever allowed to leave once basic training has started because they might not come back to complete it. Your BF will probably have a few days off for Christmas, but he will probably be restricted to the base because his training isn't over. Usually basic training lasts 11-12 weeks, so he won't be getting a leave until some time in January 2008. The only reason they would allow him to leave is if there is a confirmed emergency at home like the death of one of his parents and he would be under strict orders to return after the funeral was over.

You can send him "care" packages any time. He will probably want stuff like snacks, cookies, candy, etc. of the edible type. You can send him after shave, bug repellent, books, magazines, and other things of that nature. He won't have much space to store anything and a lot probably will not be allowed, so the other types of gifts are going to have to wait until his training is over. Besides that, he won't be having much free time to enjoy anything else. By all means write to him as much as you can because he will need that contact from home to keep him going.

The Navy does not allow you to leave basic for holidays. This is actually good practice though because more than likely he will be at sea for at least one or two major holidays. As far as a Christmas present goes I would wait until he gets home because he won't be able to have any "fun" stuff while at basic.

My husband was in Marine Corps boot camp during Christmas and couldn't come home, training stopped for one day (hard core). We did however get a phone call from him. We sent him baked goods from home that he shared with everyone (to include the harda$% drill instructors).

Only the Army gives X-mas leave during basic.

The other branchs do not.

It's up to your BF, if he wants to take the 10 days leave.

And it can be denied, if he is having trouble in basic.

what Branch? Navy, he won't be leaving Great Lakes at all, he'll get Sunday routine and maybe, if he is far enough along, be allowed to be 'adopted' by a family who will take him to their place and feed him dinner.

Yes he will get a two week "Exodus"...this is really not for the knuckle heads but to give the Drills and Instructors a break from them...
