Tax write-off. Also, it looks good to his consumers.
However, it is a nice thing that he is doing. My "sister" is riding her way through college on his money- the Bill Gates Scholarship. With this scholarship she can get her Doctorate Degree. ...and she is not the only one. That is pretty nice I would have to say. Whether his motivations are good or unjust, he is doing many a favor.

He's a compassionate man with a lot of money he could never spend, to whom much is given, much is expected. What good is the money doing just setting their, and how many houses do you need, you can only live in one at a time.
Having a lot of money means the responsibility is great.

Bill came from a wealthy family. I dont' think there is anything motivating him besides the idea that helping people is the right thing to do. Also, it helps him feel like the time spent is worthwhile. What nobler activity is there than philanthropy? There might also be a boost to his prestige within the super-rich community.

Maybe Just maybe there is no ulterior motive. Maybe he just feels so fortunate at his success and his own furfillment from his own life and maybe even a personal beleif that he should be good to others also. YA KNOW LIKE KARMA! AND yes it is a tax write off and all that stuff but who cares. HE IS DOING IT. HE IS HELPING OTHERS AND GIVING SCHOOL KIDS COMPUTERS AND HEY ATLEAST HE ISN'T LIKE BRITTNEY SPEARS LOSING HER KIDS OVER DRUGS AND LIKE OTHER STARS WHO ARE SEX,DRUG AND VIOLENCE ADDICTS WHO JUST CARE ABOUT THEM SELVES.
FOR ONCE THERE IS A GOOD GUY OUT THERE WHO IS NOT IN LOTS OF TROUBLE AND I THINK WE SHOULD BE GLAD OF HIM AND ANYONE LIKE HIM. NOT TRYING TO FIND A FAULT WITH HIM!!!

From what I heard on television, he or any of the wealthy people aren't donating enough. It's said that the middle class donates a higher percentage of their money then the wealthy. He wants people to think he is helping, but unfortunately he's not giving enough. "Financial Securty" is what they claim it is.

I would say that he's doing what a responsible citiczen of the world SHOULD do if they have billions. "To whom much is given, much is expected." Pretty sure that came from the Bible and not Spiderman.

He ain't made me any dang richer. I think the question you meant to ask was, why is Bill Gates such a penny-pinching heat miser that he can't spare a few bucks to help me make rent
