I recommend a good therapist. Overcoming panic d/o with agoraphobia takes time and effort. Either find a hands on therapist who is willing to work with you out in the real world, continue to take meds, or a combination of the two. The main thing is to find out what is causing your symptoms and eventually get rid of them.

I didn't read that because it was too long. I'm just answering what you put in the subject line: they don't know exactly what mental illness is. They think it might have to do with the brain.

I am not a psychiatrist or a Dr. or anything but I know exactly how you feel. I have a history of depression, and even though I've never been officially diagnosed with it, I believe I have social anxiety disorder (SAD). I try to avoid social situations, I never say the right things, and most people don't like me b/c I come out rude and snobby, even when I don't mean to. I've taken Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil before. Zoloft was the SSRI that worked the best for me. I stopped my meds b/c I couldn't tolerate the side effects, and besides that, I am totally non-compliant with medications.
I know that I am not "normal", and I've tried to become normal so many times that I just gave up. I just came to the conclusion that not everyone can be normal... I just deal with my "non-normality", you know. I know it sucks to feel that you're strange and that you don't belong, but oh well... I just live life and get through it. I wish I could help you find a good psychiatrist, but I am not sure where you live...
To be honest with you, I've never liked psychiatrists or therapists. To me, they're just ppl who are just doing their job, and that they can't be of much help since they don't know what I am going through, like, they understand, but they've never experienced it. But that's just my personal opinion, a lot of people do believe that psychiatrists and therapists can help people in distress a lot!!! Psychiatrists and therapists can only help people who want to help themselves, and apparently, you're more willing to get the help you need and get better. I don't know how much your condition affects you, but just try to get through it... live one day at a time. I just believe that we can't all be normal. I find it unfair and I haven't fully learned to accept the fact that I am not normal, but I just deal with. Just remember that it could be worse, like, you could be paralyzed, dying of cancer, or in a vegetative state. That will make you feel better in times of distress.
Good luck with everything, I hope my feedback has helped you feel a little better. I always find that advice is so much better when it comes from people who've been through the same or a similar experience you're going through than from people who are just trying to be nice.;-
I wish you the best, honestly. :-)
