with the new age of all this chatting and text messaging, will they actually know how to spell anything correctly in the future?

Please, have you seen the spelling and grammar on this site alone? Factor that in with a culture that coddles everyone and tells them that no one can tell them that they're wrong, and they should spell as they feel. The English language is doomed.

I am afraid not... Even now when I tell someone they didn't spell a word correctly they would just say something like at least other people know what they mean by it. I do not know how to spell every word correctly but I do make a big deal of spelling, so I will teach my kids how to spell. (I want to start studying for a teacher next year, so help those children!) :)

It really depends on the parents because I have younger sisters who are very much about text messaging and using the instant messengers all day long, but my mother ensures that they are well read, and she makes the time to help them with spelling and speech as well.
They know that when they come home from school, or are out with my mom that they have to speak, write and behave differently than if they're just hanging out with their friends. So, if parents are willing to take the extra time to ensure that their children are well educated, then there's no reason for the next generation to grow up "stupid".

Good question. About 20 years ago I bought 2 of my nieces a watch with a dial. They were 12, & could not tell the time, because they only had digital before. #

I am a horrible speller and I try to spell correctly, and it drives me crazy the way some kids spell. What worries me is that mis-pronunciation will follow the mis-spelling.

Well, MY kids will be good spellers. I can't say about everyone else's kids.
