I found out yesterday that I have to take a Glucose test at my next doc appointment. I know that I have to drink this punch like stuff an hour before my appointment and then I have to get my blood drawn BUT I have no clue why I’m taking this test or what happens if I fail. My doc was in such a hurry yesterday (he had to go do a C-Section) and so he didn’t go into detail. Does anyone know more info?

The test is for pregnancy induced diabetes, otherwise known as gestational diabetes. You will drink the punch, which will make your blood sugar spike. They will draw your blood in an hour to see how well your body is processing the sugar. if your blood sugar is too high, you may have gestational diabetes, and they will send you back for a 3 hr blood sugar test.
Don't stress too much. Many women will fail the first test but pass the second. And even if you have GD, your dr will help you manage it with diet and possible medication. Good luck!

It tests for Gestational Diabetes. When I had to do it doc sent me for the 1 hour test. I had to go in and get a tube of blood taken, which tests your blood sugar level prior to the drink they give you. then drink the very yucky stuff. wait an hour and get another vial of blood taken. Now that test came back a little on the high side, so a week later they sent me for a 3 hour test. this started the same way. blood taken, drinking the drink, an hour later another vial, an hour later another vial and finally hour three the last vial. oh yeah, you are supposed to fast too they told me nothing to eat or drink besides water after midnight, make sure your appt is in the a.m. also in response to the first woman that answered your question she is correct many woman " fail " the first time!!! I did but everything was fine.

Every pregnant woman has to take this test. So don't worry there is nothing going wrong. I have taken it so many times. They do it to see if you have gestational diabetes. I have it in all my pregnancies. It is just something that they have to monitor if you do have it.
I have to take insulin and everything when I am pregnant but I think it is more so because there is a very strong history of diabetes in my family. Mother has it her mother has it my brother has it and now I have it too.
Anyway when you go for the test bring a book or something to keep you busy. It is really boring. The drink is really sweet and makes me feel sick to my stomach at first. Do not eat or drink anything before you go or they can make you take another one. All in all my doctor said most come out perfectly normal. So don't worry. I hope this helped.

Since your doc have to do a C-section, I presumed hes an Obstetrician and you are probably pregnant. Its called an Oral Glucose Tolerance test or Glucose Challenge Screening test to determine how your body handles glucose and to see if you have diabetes.. If it takes a long time for your blood glucose to return to normal after you drink the solution, you might have prediabetes or gestational diabetes. This is requested if you had diabetes during your first pregnancy; had a baby more than 8.8 lbs;more than 25 yrs old and overweight prior to getting preggy; det whether you have polycystic ovary. Taken during 24-28th wks of pregnancy.
