The sins of Lot were vexing his soul.
God was merciful to Lot and brought him out of the city (sin).
And like sin, Lot was not to look back (longing) for it.
Lot's wife did long for things of Sodom, and when she heard it being destroyed she looked back at what she was loosing.

Pillar of salt and puff and smoke are virtually identical in the language of the time. Lot's wife did not turn around, she lagged behind and disappeared in a puff of smoke. If you read the original text from the Sumerians then you get a better idea of what went on.

Probably because he did not want Lot to see the cruise missle delivering a 40 megaton warhead. Lot's dumb *** wife didn't evacute quick enough and was incinerated in the fireball.

That he and his family would turn into a pillar of salt. His wife looked back, and she turned into one. This is shown as an example of turning your back against sin.

my point of view is GOD didn't want them to see the fury of HIS anger or write down of what they saw that is why if anyone turned back they would turn to a pillar of salt.so there is no record of of what happened.
