If you're browsing the web or in a market and come across oil paintings; what would make you stop and consider purchasing? Price? Subject? For yourself? or as a gift?

My first consideration would be the painting itself. It would have to catch my attention, it would have to be something that I could see myself looking at and elaborating on for periods of time. Then I would check the price to see if it was in my price range

I would never buy a painting as a gift unless I would hang it in my own home. I am very attracted to bold colors. I'm not a big fan of the standard "landscape" or "still life", unless the artist has painted their impression of it. Although it takes a lot of talent to be able to create an almost photographic replica of a subject, I find this kind of boring to look at. I like to see the artist paint their impression of the subject. Watercolor is my favorite thing to paint in, because the colors are so vivid and pure. The white of the paper reflects the light back through the paint making it almost shimmer with color. The most important thing in buying a painting is to find something that really speaks to you. My favorite artist of all times is Marc Chagall. Google some of his paintings. I always look to his work for inspiration when I hit a wall while painting.

The subject is the last thing I consider. As an artist I know that subject matter is very personal and means more to the artist than to anyone else but I do notice composition , technique , and style. I do buy paintings often and have to rotate then on my walls because I have so many (paintings ; not walls).

A good question.

I once worked in an auction house, I saw dozens and dozens of paintings. The price would not make me stop and consider purchasing alone - the subject would. I know what I like in a painting, but buying for others would take a little guess work.

The subject would be historical, or represent another culture (not my own).

Cheers.

First of all, they say that warm colored paintings outsell cool colored ones 3 to 1. If I am whipping through a website, I have noticed that my eye is caught by complementary colors, and bolder contrast between the elements in the paintings. I don't look much at pastel colors, delicate renderings or prissily overworked subjects. In a gallery I might focus on such things in order to appreciate them, but when I'm scanning in a hurry, something with bold texture or color or composition catches my eye first. I LIKE realism, but it must be boldly executed.

I have found that most people buy artwork because of the subject matter, color or maybe because they consider it an investment. They like a particular piece of work because it goes with their decor.
However, there are others who invest in an artist and his particular style of work. Usually these are the ones who can afford to spend a great deal of money and gamble a little bit in the art world.

It's all about how the painting makes them feel. If that isn't right, then nothing else matters.
