Go get the surgery and then file bankruptcy! I don't think they can deny you medical care and let you die if you cannot pay!

The hospital will continue to attempt to collect the debt from you, and the other suggestions are not helpful for your position. You should contact the hospital and see if you can negotiate a reduced bill if you make payment arrangements and stick to the schedule. You are not Medicaid eligible and will not be. The hospital is under no obligation to help you out. They provided a service and now want payment. I understand it was an emergency and you did not ask for this situation, but none the less it happened. Most hospital business offices have collection specialists that will work with you. Also do not think that if you pay $5 a month, the hospital "can't do anything". They can turn you over to collections and litigate for payment. Review your finances and see what would be an amount you can pay, talk to the hospital and stick to the schedule you work out with them. Sorry about your bad luck, I hope things get better for you.

Call the hospital's main number and ask for the social workers. Explain to them your predicament and see if they can help you. Some hospitals have charities set up for things like this. Otherwise, you have to make a payment plan with the hospital - even $20 a month forever. If you don't, they can send you to a collection agency and possibly sue you for it - and they'd win.

You talk to the hospital, work out a cash price, and a payment plan to pay it off.

Or you just go ahead and have it done, and have the collection agents hounding you for years.

It's surgery, it's NECESSARY, you tell us, it's an EMERGENCY, and you have a baby depending on you. You have to take care of it, and worry about the money part later.

DO NOT FILE BANKRUPTCY! Pay what you can every month. This way they will see you are trying. When you can, negotiate a settlement for a lesser amount.
