you think of all the thousands of people burned alive; roasted slowly alive on a slow burning spit, red hot tongs dismembering delecate body parts then sprinkled with "holy water"; children stamped on in front of their tortured parents; being sawn in half alive and having limbs ripped from their sockets.

All done in the name of God. (not that God wanted it)

That don't happen any more so at what point did the churches become true christian churches?
Or is it that human society itself changed first thus the clergy could no longer get away with doing this as before?

So those who defend are saying the church who tortured people for heresy are the heretics themselves. That it was okay back then because it was years ago? Excuse me, thousands of men, women and children died gross deaths but hey the church can brush that under the carpet.
It is okay, because "the church is all better now. We are still teaching truths even though we totally abandoned them for centuries earlier".

Those things have nothing to do with the teachings of the Church, which are true. That was they way of the world back then. Its not a Christian thing: It was a human thing. We have grown up since then. You should ask this question of the Muslims, who still chop off people's heads, or the atheist Communists who still throw people into gulags.

It depends on ones Priest and also, I think on a persons upbringing. I live in Canada. Raised and still am a Confessional Lutheran. I grew up in a rural area of Ontario and have many friends who are of Irish Catholic Decent. Also from the Same Parish were 2nd. generation Dutch Catholics. The Dutch never had a problem attending other Churches, however they would only Commune in a Catholic Church. Communion in our Church is closed to those not in fellowship, so in my Church they were not allowed anyway. My Irish friends still are uncomfortable attending another Church, and some quickly run to the Priest to confess it as a sin! There Priest was an old Irish Priest. He and I became good friends until he died. He had no problem with attending each others Church. As a matter of fact he admonished me for not receiving the sacrament in his Church, He reasoned that since we both believed in the real presence of Christs body and blood, and the means of grace (the forgiveness of sins given with Christs Body and Blood). Go figure. Keep it between you and God Maybe its Cultural.

hey, i know where you're coming from. It was my ancestors that were tortured by the inquisition. We were called dissenters and hated and drowned and cursed to hell. It changed when the reformation brought about another way. We are not saved by works or doctrine or even church attendance. We are saved by faith in Jesus Christ. Martin Luther, who was also hunted by the inquisition, realized that that Catholic Church had taught wrongly when he was reading in the book of Romans 1:17, "the just shall live by faith." The emphasis of the church became not who was going to hell any longer, but who would go to Heaven. And who doesn't want to go to Heaven. And it is not a white place, where we sit on clouds and strum harps. It is an incredible place where those who believe in Him, Jesus, will live forever. It's not about fear, but God's love for us no matter what we've done or who we are. He loves you and wants you to have an incredible life of forgiveness and peace and acceptance. That's what the True Church is all about. By the way, Jesus is so wonderful that he allows us free will, and that means we do bad things...even church people. But I would say that those who did such horrible things were not His and certainly were not doing His work. Jesus loved and healed and forgave. Remember John 3:16..."for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son (Jesus) that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. But i really like the next verse, "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through HIm might be saved." Saved from what? Our stupid mistakes and saved for Heaven. God wants to give us abundant life and eternal life. All we've got to do is turn from our sin, turn to HIm, and receive His free gift. That's the message of the true Church of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Because we live in a wicked world and are not promised that we will not suffer or be killed. God's own son was hung from a cross. God forbid that we will never have to go through some of these horrible things that we read about, but if we do, God will be there with us. And we have another life to live, when we leave this one. And I'm not brave....and I think about it a lot...I haven't got all the answers, but I do believe God and His promises. This is not heaven....yet!

Yep. The Church has not often risen above the times in which it has existed. However the Church has ever been at the forefront of societal CHANGE for the better.

Read your history, dear one. The Church itself is primarily responsible for society growing past those barbarous ages.

Listen, I don't even attempt to excuse their actions...but you should remember the medieval ages happened shortly after Rome fell...then new governments were trying to take over each other (ottomans vs europeans) and then there was the reformation, etc. etc. so for Rome to keep the peace and stability, they had to install fear into people...which resulted in things like the crusades and the inquisition...Rome had to make a point that it was still in control...

I think you are sensationalizing. Yes, many atrocities have been committed in the name of God, but these were not committed by true believers. Just as Muslim terrorists are not an example of true Muslim faith. Throughout history mankind has poured out horror on his fellowman for many reasons and dogmas. Sadly, Atheism leads the pack at this time in history for the masses who died under its rule. (Pol Pot, Stalin, Hitler, Chinese Communism)

Are you currently equalling Christ with the Catholic or Protestant 'church"? If you are; no wonder the church is so 'messed up' in obeying Christ currently here on Earth.
