Something cheap, and that wouldnt look too tacky, and would also block out most if not all of the sunlight would be to coat heavy drapes in opaque liquid latex.. so long as they hang close to the frame of the window it should work rather nicely.. If you paint a lighter color on the outside, and a darker color on the inside it will also improve your cooling issues.. Liquid latex can be baught for as inexpensive as 16 dollars a tub.. depending on how large your windows actually are you could convert a set of curtains for around $100 i would guess.. The finished product will probably resemble upholstery vynil in texture and appearance.. Tip if you do go this route, dont even bother trying to buy it at a sex shope, they tend to gauge prices, find some at a costume shope, or look online.. Do not use paint, paint gets stiff.. Another option of course is to have someone you know make drapes for you that rest in runners.. (the final product is basically an insulated drape with a rod at one end, and a pull cord/motor to raise/lower it) If you know any handy people they could probably pull it off for less than 100 for materials, pluss whatever you give them for their time.. Yeah i think that covers it.. kinda..

If you want to use long panels, why not just take down the verticals. If you are renting, you could store them until you are ready to move and than just put them back. If you want to leave them up, then a top treatment is all you really need. Verticals with long draperies seem a bit heavy and redundant.

It's fine to do that, in fact it looks much nicer than just the blinds alone. Gives you better options for light-control and privacy, too. And when the blinds are pulled back, you'll just see the curtains, which is a nicer look, I think. Do whatever you think looks best! Good Luck!

You don't need to have both but a decorative drapery can soften the harder look of the blinds. I do a single panel on either side of my windows just for that reason. They are not there to add anything more than a look.

No it is not wrong... I would recommend it... Go to JC Penney's they have a great site where u can check out different kinds of treatments on different types of windows, and they will let you change the carpet and wall colors to give you a better idea!
So have fun!

Seems a bit strange, when you already have something doing the work of curtains but then put on a second set.
But still, you can do what you like, it's your place.

Not at all! Knock yourself out! JC Penney is the best place to look for draperies at a reasonable price.

No, it softens the look of the blinds....maybe hides them if you don't like the look of the verticals.
