Yep... its called a scraper and elbow grease.
Put down plastic before starting, and cover everything. This is going to get messy.
If you use a spray bottle and mist the wall a bit before scraping it will help cut down on the dust a bit, but not much... I prefer to do it without the added moisture creating a mess on the floor.
You may also find that the wall seams need some work... that is 'usually' why a texture like artex is used... to reduce labor in smoothing the walls.
Your other option is to remove the drywall entirely, and start over. You might seriously think about this... it can be faster to rip out the old drywall and put up new... but it costs more. Get your prices before starting :)
Tip on scraping - wear a good dust mask, eye protection, and you might want to check into the disposable jumpsuits sold for painters, etc. Seal off the room you are working in from the rest of the house.
Good Luck

You could use a steamer, as with wall paper, it helps to soften the artex, before scrapping.

plaster over it - removal is a waste of time and effort, even if you can it will take you so long and at the end you will still have to fill any holes/dents etc with filler and then sand them all flat, same with any surface area that has been damaged.
