Your marriage license will be enough proof for everything. No, generally, you cannot change your name before the marriage.
For social security, you'll need to visit a local office in person and carry your marriage license with you. Very important to do this, if you don't, when you file income tax (if you file jointly), or apply for a job using your married name, the names won't match up and could cause unnecessary delays.
You can download the necessary form for social security on the website: www.socialsecurity.gov. Look for form SS-5 or you can wait until you get to the office. The name change cannot be done over the phone. It could be done by mail, but you'd have to mail all of your documents along with photo ID. It's much easier and safer to just go in person.
If you don't know where an SSA office is, you can call 1-800-772-1213 to find out.

You have to have the marriage certificate certified before you can do it. Basically, all I did was take a copy of the marriage certificate to the DMV, and to the Social Security Administration--and they processed the name change right there. You'll also need to send a copy to any financial accounts you have, but I doubt it has to be a legal, certified copy.
This process does vary from state to state, so I'd reccommend simply asking when you get your marriage licence at the courthouse. That clerk will know the steps you take to legally change your name, and if there's a charge--but I wouldn't think there would be.
p.s. I'm in KS, and I remember if I wanted a new drivers licence with my married name on it, there was a charge (same as replacing a licence), but if I wanted to just wait until my current licence expired, my new licence would have the new name on it.

Call your local DMV to be sure. I lived in GA when I got married and all I had to do was go down to the DMV with my marriage license and identification and it was changed for me. Congratulations!
To change it other places just call and inform them, some will want a copy or a certified copy of your marriage license so be sure to order or purchase SEVERAL copies of it!
To change it with your social security number you just have to go down to your local Social Security office with your marriage certificate.
It all just takes a lot of time and a lot of waiting, it can be pretty tetious. Good luck!
Cost varies place to place.
It does take some waiting, which is disapointing because once you're married you really want that name change ASAP! But, once everything is mailed in you can buy the licenses fromt he county clerk and if you have any more questions concerning the name change they'll have the information for you. You may even want to call them now to find out all of the different processes!

Usually the minister mails the marriage certificate in. Once you have a copy of the marriage certificate (takes about a week after the wedding), get a certified copy from the county clerks office. Then take it to DMV and social security office. Yes there is a charge for DMV. You will need to call them or go online to find out their prices. I live in Oregon but Im pretty sure its about the same in every state. Congratulations!!

Go to the court house after the wedding. I am from Michigan, so I am not sure about the price. Be sure to have all the paper-work (marriage-license) ready and along at the wedding so it can be signed after the ceremony.

I don't know the particulars, but you need to get married and have a marriage certificate. Then you have to go the court house and file for a name change on your license and social security card. The cost is whatever the filing fee is.

from what I remember, you have to do it after your married, because whoever marries you will have to sign your marriage license.
Then you will just have to take your marriage license to the DMV and get a new drivers license and go to the social security office and get a new social security card. From then, your name is changed.
