Yes.
No one who did not truly believe in God could write what he has written. For example:
His first encyclical, Deus Caritas Est (On Christian Love): http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/benedict_xvi/encyclicals/documents/hf_ben-xvi_enc_20051225_deus-caritas-est_en.html
His first book (as Pope): Jesus of Nazareth: http://www.amazon.com/Jesus-Nazareth-Pope-Benedict-XVI/dp/0385523416
With love in Christ.

Not only does he believe in him, but it is the entire purpose of his life.
The Pope is supposed to be the successor of the apostle, Peter. The Apostle Peter, also known as Saint Peter, was one of the Twelve Apostles whom Jesus chose as his original disciples.
The Catholic Church believes Jesus made St. Peter the leader of the Apostles, hence, Prince of the Apostles, and constituted him as the guardian of His entire flock (the Church) in His own place, thus making him His Vicar and fulfilling the promise He made in Matthew 16:18-19.
The word "vicar" means one who serves as a substitute.

I think the Pope honestly does, and he's gotta be thinking that god's been pretty good to him. I think he's mistaken in his belief, but I think that is what he believes.

Probably not ... but they know that the people in their religion need to believe in something. So they herd the sheep in that general direction.
