I ride my bicycle a lot, the longest run being 75 miles a couple of months ago... I had no knee problems, but I ran 1 mile on the treadmill the other day, and my knees have hurt for almost a week now. Why does one total abuse not bother me, while one short run (at a medium pace) on the treadmill hurt me? Should I not ride bike, in the fear I'm damaging them more?

Riding your bike is fine. The reason your knees hurt more after running on the treadmill is because the bicycle gives your legs a steady flowing motion where as the treadmill forces you to strain your leg's joints with every time your feet hit the ground. My recommendation would be to keep riding your bike, but start slow with less distance and gradually build up on the treadmill.

The differance in biking and running related to the knees would be the pressure being applied to the knees. Riding a bike won't really put weight or pressure on your kness. While running the joints in the knee receive the weight of your body.
Some one may be able to lift a 10lb. weight several times in repetition with ease and then lift 50lbs. once and feel pain from it for the next week. I'd say it's the same type effect.

Well, you were standing on your treadmill which causes more pressure on your knee joints than sitting while riding does. Rest them up a little, maybe a little ice/heat and aspercreme and some ibuprofen. Stick to the bike.

You don't put your full weight on the bike most of the time and when you do, it's with a steady pressure on the pedals. When you're on the treadmill, your entire weight is constantly jarring up and down as you walk/jog/run. OUCH!! Save your joints; use the bike. Save cash; sell the treadmill.

riding a bike is much easier on the knees there is no direct pressure on them. running, you knees absorb all the pressure. i have been told for my medical conditions, riding a bike or swimming is the easiest. on a bike you do not have the full weight of your body and gravity on the knee, running you do.
