Memory is the key to Vista. The more you have, the faster it runs. Keep in mind that this assumes all other levels of administration are good to go also. Such as keeping registry uncluttered, keeping files on hard drive in order Disk defragmentor and keeping internet cashe and files to a minimum size.

I've tried messing with the themes to improve my benchmarks on my PC with little success, which leads me to believe that most appearance changes such as changing from aero to basic or getting rid of the gadgets and even disabling my dreamscene failed to improve the performance of my PC. The best thing I did to improve performance was defrag taking a tip from here:

and then erasing doing a disk clean up as well as erasing unnecessary programs to free hard drive space. I got a 10% boost on my PCmark05 test and a 15% boost on my PC Performance Benchmark.

From what I hear, you have to throw lots of memory at it. I've used the company below to buy memory for a computer, with good results. You can use the tools on their site to determine what you need, and what your system is capable of holding.

If you decide to install the memory chips yourself (and it's not hard - the website has the instructions, I think), be sure you get an anti-static wrist strap, to keep from toasting the chip with static electricity. It's only a few dollars, and it's cheap insurance.

If you turn off Aero you might as well not have Vista at all, as Aero is about the only thing its got going for it !

Best thing to do is boost your RAM.
