Why are there second hand stories of this happening, but when a Christian proselytizes a family member and is rebuffed, it doesn't happen?

Bud,
Because it's totally not true. God's love for us is patient, kind and long suffering! He knows how stupid we are and waits for us. He also says to not worry about those who will be saved; He decides who will be saved! "Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son". John 3:18.

The altar call scenario adds to the drama, but also to the bad theology. Because now Johnny was "lucky" because of what HE did to earn his own salvation. The focus goes away from God's action in his life, over to the sinner's actions. Private rebuffing doesn't carry the same drama, but the bad theology can be there, too.

If it does not ensue disclose the evangelist. They make widely used claims so as that they are proof against being instructed they have been incorrect. Dare them to call a particular call and then enable them to set forth their judgement between witnesses. God does not kill us for unlikely to an regulate...that should negate the loose selection deal.

They're called modern parables.
As a parable is a fictional story with the purpose of teaching a moral, it's easy to see how they apply, and what the implicit message is, "Accept my version of Jesus or die."
The thing to remember about parables is they're lies told for the purpose of teaching a moral. Lies.

Family member refuses to accept Jesuschrist and then dies suddendly, on the spot?

Well, no one knows when the time of his/her death will come or which will be his/her last opportunity to accept Jesus. I have heard of people rejecting Jesus while at the hospital and then dying, but never at a church's service or revival meeting. But, then the event described is totally possible, no one knows when he/she going to die, then better make your desicion today.

Because they are just stories - its a way of people manipulating others and getting power over them - don't believe the hype!

Weird... a friend of mine just died suddenly very soon after telling me he thought Bryan Adams was cr@p. Perhaps we all need to bow down at the altar of St Bryan for fear it happens to us....

Because they are stories. Xians use parables so often that they start accepting any well intentioned story as truth or as a acceptable way to convey truth.
