The best way to improve your public speaking is to get involved in "Toast Masters International", there is probably a club in your area. Read some Dale Carnegie books, and most importantly become a better listener. Communication is not just being articulate, it is also knowing your auidence and her needs. Public speaking is ranked up there at the top of things people are most afraid of. Practice is the best approach to dealing with a struggle regarding public speaking, and those clubs I mentioned are so well equiped to make you a better speaker. The cost is next to nothing, the friends you'll meet, and this is a huge Resume builder. I would also consider reading the book "how to make friends and influence people" by Dale Carnegie. They also offer a wide range of courses that are well worth taking. Best of Luck kid!

The most important part of communication is listening. This may sound trite, but a being good listener is harder than you think. Most people that think they are good listeners aren't, as they are already thinking of responses before the talker has finished. Reading up on good listening skills would be a great start.

As far as public speaking, start out with a friendly audience. When I was a regular church attendee, I did the readings once a month....the audience is great....most congregations love having someone other than themselves get up in front. And it was easy, as you only have to read other material.

Know your material....and speak to people who want to learn it. They aren't as judgemental of the style of presentation.

I also preferred early on to speak to anyone who was not in my profession...that was always intimidating-that I might make a mistake.

And as mentioned by others, the more you do it, the easier it is!

Take a public speaking class first........I get so nervous when it comes to speaking in public, something I will probably never get over. Do research and view lots of motivational speakers and pick up some of their positive traits you feel can help you get your message to a crowd. Education of course is key, but I find that experience is the best course. Know how to grow each time you speak. Video tape yourself at home giving a speech and see what you like and what you don't like and work from there. Good Luck!

Listen...to what the other person is saying and affirm what they said, before you give them an answer. When people are 'understood' the doors to communication fly wide open, because people do not care what you 'know',' but only that you care.

Listening is nearly a lost art. Too many people love to be heard and even love the sound of their own voice. If you can master the virtue of being a good listener, you communication skill will accepted and valued and take you very far with people.

To improve your communicating skills I would say communicate more. Practice makes perfect.

If you are looking to be a better speaker how about going to a poetry reading and practicing there, or some other venue where you can fine-tune your skills.

Try opening up, be more relaxed, speak clearly and intelligently.

Sounds like you are on the right track already!

Hope this helps!!

I know this is going to be very irritating but they only way to become a better public speaker is to practice speaking in public.
You can take a speech class at a local CC or if you are an expert in an appropriate field you can always volunteer to speak at a school or event

You can take speech classes or join groups like the Lamplighters. They'll help you make speeches and learn to speak in public. Also remember that listening is key in the communications process. I took a course in Hostage Negotiations and Suicide Intervention. Those classes taught me more than your average comm class. Good luck.

before trying to speak at a public, it would be better if you concentrated every time you speak, no matter to whom, to speak correctly, in an intelligebile manner. :)
Focuse every time you speak, no matter if you speak to friends, family or stangers. After some time, if you think you'r good enough, try speaking more often to strangers, just for the love of it. This way, you'll learn these skillz, without even noticing, It takes some time, though..

To improve any kind of communication skill, you must stop thinking about yourself at all.

Those who can focus entirely on the receiver of their message, including interpreting the feedback from the receiver, will improve markedly. Those who think about themselves will continue to stumble, hitting the mark only now and then.
