Eg
I am currently a bacelor of commerce majoring in accounting and management. The business environment, even though i could adapt to it would not suit me as being a police officer. I got the degree as a fallback so i am qualified to do a range of jobs eg accountant so i can always find work.

Would it be better to pursue a career path with a greater financial reward that i may get unsatisfied with (accountant) or pursue a career that i will have more fun and be more satisfied doing, for less financial reward.

FYI - i found uni classes to be a bit of a drag.
- average constable (police officer with about 5 years expirience) earns $50 000 - $55 000 a year plus overtime etc. An accountant with same sort of level earns around $ 70 000 in area i looking at with same years in industry expierience.

If you truely have fun and enjoy being an officer and do not mind not being able to afford everything you will ever want then go for the officer job. If you need material things to be happy, than you should suck it up and go with the accountant job. Basically what is more important, having a great home life or a great job life.

Having done both, I tend to think it is better to work to live. However, if you want to make your financial situation better, and you have good self control, living to work for about five years may be worth it to you.

If you take the increase in salary ($20,000) and banked it for five years, you would have a nice nest egg or could pay off your house, or whatever. This can really push you down the road of financial freedom. Then you can "retire" from that job and go back to something you enjoy more. It makes it more tolerable when you know there is an end in sight.

This works best if you are unattached, etc. If you are going to live for your job, this is not the time to have children, etc. because you will not be there for them. I see this happening a lot and it makes me sad.

Money is not everything. Having a life is.

If you can live a good life doing what you prefer, then just go for it.
Its a kick on the butt having to work under pressure for the rest of your life and not doing what you really want.
GO FOR IT BRO.
I'm 47 so I'm telling you this because I have experience it.
Good luck.

it's always satisfying to be working on something that you really enjoy and love. financial benefits are also rewarding but doing a job with utmost interest and joy will be more rewarding and stress free. just practice proper financial management and you'll be ok. good luck.

Personally I'd go for the Police job, much more interesting PLUS you get to retire early on full pension.

Definitely work to live - it's a job, not a lifestyle!
