When someone says how much they make a year, is that before or after taxes?

Before. After could be different depending on your situation. For instance, two people could make the same amount of money before taxes but if one is single with no dependents and one is married with 4 dependents then the single person is going to pay more taxes, thereby making his after taxes amount lower than the other person. Make sense?

Before!!! It sounds much better that way. It's sad to think how much we make after taxes.
